Here’s a drawing from our training slides that might help clarify the data relationships.
You’ll note the direct path from the CatDV Pro client to the hires media. The server does not manage that connection.
Compare this to the Web Client which has access to only metadata and proxy served “through” the CatDV Server so that that server will have control of the permissions for proxy and metadata and shares no hires media.
Maybe this can make this relationship more clear.

It varies widely.
Most of our clients are archiving camera raw straight away and only dealing with an edit format. However, that process is highly dependent on your edit software.
Avid shops tend to keep their raw on near-line or tier 2 so they can relink and do an online offline workflow without moving drives, but still not clogging the “SAN” with too much media. They relink and bring that media onto the SAN for online outputs and color grading. NSA actually has a few documented workflows for this process with Avid and XDCAM since there are some issues with relinking if you import incorrectly for the offline.
FCP7, it’s mostly as you do it. But a lot of our folks never go back to the RAW, it’s in a deep archive that can be called back but probably never will. Going forward, ProRes is the master.
Premiere and I assume FCPX will be a new game. We’re in the process of rolling out our first Premiere/RED/Pegasus/SDNA deployment including our new RED proxy creation package for making automated proxy of RED R3D files. That will tell us a lot about the future.
Basically, RED files hit the SAN, are taken into Premiere for edit, cataloged into CatDV Pegasus where an automation creates a proxy and then sends it to SDNA Evolution for archive (all in the background.)
This client doesn’t use CatDV for logging per se, but they do want an archive of all their footage and also the ability to search old footage using proxy. This will be an easy, mostly automated way to do it as opposed to their old way of making proxy with Premiere and saving it in the RED folders along side the footage.
We have another shop that we’re talking to who uses almost the same tools but they have to do an offline edit due to footage size. They can’t really make use of the native editing in Premiere due to storage costs. So just because it can do it technically, doesn’t mean you can afford to do it that way. (SANs can get big and pricey with 5K RED footage.)
It’s a wild world out there right now, I look forward to seeing the next few months as all three players catch up to using native footage.
By the way, I’m still not convinced that we’ll all be editing natively in TV any time soon on anything beyond XDCAM but I’ve been wrong before and I will again. 😉

Scott, you set the “Original Location” in the path mappings and the query picks this up as the root.
Note for other folks that this needs to be set for all similar Worker Actions that need to reproduce that virtualized root folder. It can’t be set globally as in the CatDV Pro Client. It is action by action in the Worker for reasons that will be clear as you get deeper into scripting.

Honestly, photos are not the primary use for CatDV.
That said, we’ve created some great image archives using CatDV. One thing that is good to do is to create a set of records for each person in your archive, sort of a “mugshot gallery” with an edited close up of each person along with their metadata.

Blue EyesThat way you can just tag the photos and check who’s who by a related search. Not perfect but very workable if CatDV is your only asset tracking solution.
CatDV is very focused on video and in our larger deployments we tend to integrate CatDV with another image management system, or bring assets over after tagging in another photo app that supports more advanced photo workflows with a GUID so we can track back to the other system.
Just as image systems lack the video features of CatDV, CatDV does not have some of the more advanced photo features such as face tagging etc so you may need to augment it, if photos are critical to your workflow.

Update:
One of our sysadmins reports that it should be no issue but again, this is free advice off of the internet. (Worth every penny.)
MAMP defaults to port 8889 as opposed to 3306 but changing that in your CatDV Control Panel should get you connected.
On another realted note: I’ve not done the new install clean myself but one of our techs reports and we’ve verified from Squarebox support that the java MySQL connector no longer installs as part of the CatDV Server installer. So that will have to be manually installed into your lib folder in order to connect to MySQL after CatDV Server 6.8.
In our experience, 6.8 upgrades fine without this step, but it should be noted in case that changes, or if you do the “clean” upgrade where you wipe out your catDVServer folder in /usr/local/
I should report this in another thread, but I’m lazy and or busy. 😉

Thanks for this Sebastien. Do you know the versions affected, or at least when the fix hit?
I’ve not seen this but CatDV is one app that I do trust the upgrades on and try to keep as current as possible.

You can, but the config might be a bit more difficult unless you are solid on how to cofig the two.
The stock MySQL install is pretty easy and you’ll likely get better support as that’s a very well known config for the support team. (They can speak to that better than I, but I know that it’s far more common.
That said, we love MAMP for a lot of things (Approval-Q uses it to avoid conflicts with CatDV when running on the same machine.) And it’s rock solid.
Can I ask why you’re interested in running it?

Not sure if I’m following correctly, but you can have a field “remember new values” so that as people tag and add info, it’s retained.
If this is another field, such as a Artist/Album field in USER24, let’s say, that would be populated from the values of 2 separate fields, USER20 Artist and USER18 Album, then that can’t really be done in CatDV to my knowledge.
However, there is the idea that you could have a worker action put those values into a field with an server query action using variables and they’d be moved over. Is this what you’re talking about?
