I was curious about your setup.

Are you on Mac OS X 10.3.8 at least with FCP 4.5 or are you running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) with FCP 5.0 and QuickTime 7?

Were there any P2 drivers required for your PowerBook?

Did FCP 4.5 or 5.0 recognize the media immediately without drivers?

Did you use the Media Manager to copy the project media to a harddrive or were you able to simply drag the clip over to a harddrive using Finder?

I’m glad your shoot went so effortlessly because some posts I have read are critical about the expense and limited capacity of P2 workflow.

Since GGParis is a little vague as to what codec he is going to use to capture, I suggest the following data rate and storage calculator be downloaded, aja.com – AJA_Data_Rate_Calculator_102b11.zip

GGParis, do a search of the posts current and archived with the following terms “SATA” “RAID”

And since he expressed his footage in meters and not minutes Greg Pak: Film Help: Tools: Footage Chart.

I haven’t come across a convenient meter to minutes footage calculator.

This is the best FCP keyboard map in my experience. What is really great about it is you can open it up in Mac OS X Preview or Adobe Acrobat, Command+F (Search), type a key word like mark, canvas, viewer, et al and it will take you right to the all shortcuts keys related to say like mark, mark in, mark out.

From within FCP hold your Control key while you have your cursor hovering over the dark grey blank area to the right of the tabs in any window–Browser, Viewer, Canvas, Timeline, et al–and a “Context” menu will pop up with Show Keyboard Layout or Show Button List. And like debe says, you can get to them with Option+J = Show Button List and Option+H = Show Keyboard Layout.

One of the biggest disappointments when I moved from Media100 to Final Cut Pro was the inability to print a clip bin list right from the application. Media100 was able to do this for as long as I remember, complete with clip thumbnail stills and could be color coded for best take, good take, etc if you had a color printer.

The only way to print a list from FCP is to import a CSV (Comma Seperated Value) or TAB delineated raw data file into a spreadsheet like Excel, OpenOffice or FileMaker Pro. It is important for you to know that you can arrange you bin columns in the order that you want to see your timecodes, reel numbers, duration, et al. You will have to hide the other columns that you don’t want to export. You can then save that bin column layout to something like “Log & Capture to Print” or “Print Bin“.

Did you export a QuickTime movie or a QuickTime reference movie?

Is there any chance your FCP media is not the culprit? Is there a flash frame in the original material that is not so noticeable when played back in FCP but gets multiplied in its effect as an MPEG file?

Compressor is either encoding some glitched material or is writing a file that becomes slightly corrupt.

Have you tried writing to another volume or harddrive?
