Having worked for a graphic design/advertising agency/video post firm I alway got in the habit of saving out my files with a predetermined final delivery file type.

FileWithSameName.PSD = RGBA working graphics file with all the layer for Mac & PC

FileWithSameName.PCT = RGBA for Final Cut Pro & After Effects video production

FileWithSameName.PNG = RGBA (RLE) for MS PowerPoint and some web applications

FileWithSameName.JPG = RGB lossy graphic format for web applications

FileWithSameName.TIF = CMYK for print

FileWithSameName.TGA = RGBA (RLE) for PC 3DSMax, Digital Fusion After Effects video special effects production

etc.

Don’t forget that you can disclose your keyframes right in the Sequence Timeline with Option-T. If one of them is visible in your Timeline clip you can drag them back in unison to where they need to be.

I believe in QuickTime Pro you can reset or set timecode before importing to FCP. Maybe something could be cobbled together with Cinema Tools database feature and/or its ability to import log files. FCP’s Cut Lists, Scene Lists and Pull List generation is tied to a Cinema Tools clip database.

Don’t know about the brand spanking new iMac’s but the last product cycle iMac’s only had a one 400 Mbit firewire bus. I would double check.

I get 8-bit uncompressed realtime playback through a Maxtor 250 external 400 Mbit firewire drive, so the G-Raid FW 800 drive you have would be the drive of choice. My demoreel is housed on the Maxtor. I bought the Maxtor because CompUSA had an instant rebate on it when 250 GB firewire drives were still just a bit pricey. Realtime effects are limited, but editing is doable–just use QuickView a lot for effects.

Make sure you get the ATI 9700 graphics with 128 MB and 2 GB of ram. Crucial.com is the most recommneded here on the CreativeCow.net. I am able to drive the PowerBook display and a Dell 2005 WSF 20″ wide screen monitor out of the DVI port on the PowerBook. The latest rage is the Dell 24″ wide screen with DVI, VGA, Composite, S-Video and Component inputs.

Also get a PCMCIA firewire adapter for the AJA IO LA since it is only 400 Mbit and you want the external firewire drive on its own 800 Mbit bus–the built in one on the PowerBook.

I choose the 15″ 1.67 Ghz PowerBook because the 17″ doesn’t really seem portable in a briefcase.

If you use DV, DVCAM or DVCPRO-25 apply:

1. Effects > Video Filters > Key > Color Smoothing-4:1:1

2. Effects > Video Filters > Key > Chroma Keyer

3. Effects > Video Filters > Key > Spill Suppressor–Green

Use this if you don’t get one of the 3rd Party keyers mentioned by Matte.
