  • Ipod eminem commercial- How was it done?

Can anybody tell me how the Ipod ad featuring Eminem was done? I would like to know how the urban background, the silouette of Eminem, and the paint splats were done? Thanks in advance for any help.

my guess is a combination of some really high end apps, like After Effects, Combustion, and some really good plug-ins like the Sapphire set, and some create use of photography like shooting paint splatters and compositing them in.

Overall it’s actually a pretty simple spot, just a very creative use of textures and compositing.

Hey to all the producers… first give credit to the imagination of it all.

apparently, the ad agency was able to create the eminem spot by carefully copying the Lugz arrow spot from a year or two ago…

It is unbelievable how similar the Lugz spot and the Ipod spot are. You really can’t even imagine the similarities until you watch them play side by side…Looks like that ad agency probably lost a big client.

It’s a direct LIFT. Absolutely Shameless, really!

Looking at the two of the them I think the similarities are exaggerated. The iPod silhouette figure has been used for a few years now, I think since the players were first introduce in 2001, which BTW pre-dates the Lugz ad. The most pronounced similarity is the color gradient on the cityscape. Simply using a commonly used gradient theme isn’t a copyright infringement. There is little otherwise in the text or graphical treatment (most easily cited as a copyright infringement) that is even similar. The paint splash effect that is most pronounced in the iPod ad doesn’t appear in the Lugz ad; the black drawing and arrow treatment in the Lugz ad doesn’t appear in the Apple ad. The dance character is Eminem, in a characteristic performance, not a 3D model as in the Lugz ad. That his moves and the music are in any way similar says more about the stereotypical repetitiveness of rap than it does about copyright infringement.

    All the best,

    Tom

Tom, it’s great to finally read a cogent analysis of the two ads.

However, I believe that the idea of contrasting, unnatural color schemes with silhouette black images in front was stolen by both companies from “The Endless Summer” poster, and I hope Bruce Brown gets his lawsuit going soon.

You will need to Google.com the following terms:
    “Lugz arrow” Eminem

Follow the first listing to its natural conclusion.

I posted a reply to Mike Peele congratulating him on his good call to a couple of links that parallel his speculation and logic, but the Cow took them down without so much as a personal email to me as to why. It seems like I might have mistakenly called him Matte, but that doesn’t make any sense.

I can only speculate that the web sites links are persona non grata around here. But like I said, I can only speculate.

Sorry about having to use the Secret Decoder Ring,
