  • Exporting an EDL for clips that were not captured from tape?

I work in an evironment where we do not do most of our edits from footage, as most of the footage is imported from After effects, maya, motion builder or other renders. I am looking for the best way to archive projects, not just by storing data on a backup tape or DVD, but something that can translate to other editing systems. We are primarily a Smoke house, but are using some FCP machines as well. I want an easy way to go between systems. In the smoke, you can export all of your footage to tape and the system will create an EDL based on this automatically created footage tape. Is there any way to do something similar in final cut? If not does anyone have any other ideas or solutions that they use for archiving their final cut projects other than the media manager for collecting footage.

See if this inspire you. You could do the same thing in FCP.

Wes,thanks for the tip. I realize this is definitely a legitimate solution for the occasional use, but I’m talking several spots every week being done this way. This can be quite time consuming and I don’t feel its very realistic in my situation. Does anyone know of any other way to do this, whether its through final cut itself or through a third party plugin.

FCP does not have an archive to tape function. There aren’t any plug-ins for FCP that do this, either.

Has automatic Duck ever thought about creating a plugin that does this? Does anyone have any other suggestions other than just dumping stuff to DVD or tape backup.

Sorry, no, we’re not considering it.

I believe in QuickTime Pro you can reset or set timecode before importing to FCP. Maybe something could be cobbled together with Cinema Tools database feature and/or its ability to import log files. FCP’s Cut Lists, Scene Lists and Pull List generation is tied to a Cinema Tools clip database.

    Just brainstorming,

    Don’t worry Mr. B. I have a cunning plan…
