March 27, 2013 at 8:25 am in reply to: How to get AVCHD footage from Sony A77 into my MAC Avid MC v5.5I’m very sorry so late reply to you.
1. This format, will be also legible to edit in Final cut pro (mac)?
AVCHD files, including 1080 50p/60p videos, are compatible well with FCP X. But FCP 5/6/7 doesn’t support 1080 50p/60p with L&T.
2. Is this the best solution to not lose HD quality on the video?
1080 50p/60p MTS:
If you want to get the original video quality, you have to use Sony Vegas Pro 12, Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 or FCP X 10.0.4 to edit videos. Not 1080 50p/60p MTS:
Most NLE’s can support the video now. If not, you can download the MTS Coverter I used to transcode AVCHD(MTS/M2TS) to a playable format. You will find zero quality loss after the conversion. -
We can Log and Transfer MXF, DNxHD, MTS, ect files to FCP editing. As ProRes is FCP’s naitve format, the importing prores will need some rendering time.

Avid’s native codec is DNxHD. If the imported files are MXF, AVCHD, ect videos, we have to use AMA Plugin to transcode them to the DNxHD codec and import to Avid editing.

We can import and transcode Sony MXF files into FCP 7 with both Log&Transfer and XDCAM plug-in. But we have to connect Sony XDCAM camcorder to Mac for rendering video. And as far as I know XDCAM plug-in doesn’t support SD MXF video.
So we’d better convert MXF to ProRes firstly for taking into FCO 5/6/7 smoothly editing.
FCP X can native support MXF files without any plugin.

Have you met the similar trouble? Do you know Apple has made a change in Mac OS X v10.8 (Mountain Lion)? The change has affected the workflow for importing AVCHD media into Premiere Pro.

You can use Log and Transfer plugin to help you freely to transcode MXF to FCP or directly get MXF to FCP for editing natively.
If your file is not supported by Log and Transfer, you can download a cheap MXF Converter to convert MXF to ProRes and import to FCP 7.

If your MXF file is Canon camcorder, I believe the post “Two ways to ingest Canon XF305 MXF recordings to Final Cut Pro 7” can give you a big help.

Hello, Miguel.
The MPEG-2 MXF file from Sony XDCAM is too big, I guess.
You need to crop the videos. Or you can transcode the file to Apple ProRes with a smaller file for directly importing to FCP 7 for editing.
Signature: Are you Canon EOS C300 users? If so, do you want to get the MXF recordings to FCP 6/7 for further editing?
