    Hi all,

Our broadcaststations from now on want commercials to be delivered in MXF format instead of tape. Is there a way to export MXF files directly from FCP? Or is episode pro the only option?

    Thanx!

It depends on the codec needed for delivery … MXF is just the container.
Sony’s free XDCAM Transfer includes an FCP Export component that will rewrap your DV, IMX, HDV or XDCAM HD variant edits to MXF
Or maybe this is what you need: https://mxf4mac.com/mxf4qtexport

    Thanx,

I guess I don’t need a wrapper, it needs to be a real MXF file. Thanks for the link. I also heard a MXF export option for FCP is being developped.

    Frans,

    MXF is a wrapper!
There can be many things in there. So first check with your customer what kind of MXF he wants/can work with.

[Andreas Kiel] “So first check with your customer what kind of MXF he wants/can work with.

Exactly. It’s like a client saying they want a Quicktime movie…

Okay, is that Uncompressed or MPEG1? HD or SD? We don’t know until the client tells us the details.

The link to MXF4mac (MXF4QT Export) will export the following types of MXF:

    MXF OP1a GC (D-10) 625/50 PAL, 525/60 NTSC
    IMX 30, 40 and 50 Mb/s

OP1a refers to audio and video multiplexed to a single file, unlike Panasnoic P2 MXFs which are OP-atom which means demuxed (separate) audio and video.

This is a guess, but I would imagine that your broadcaster wants one of the SMPTE approved MXF formats.

    Jeremy,

Could you send me your email address. There is (maybe) some cool stuff you can test with the mxf4mac P2 workflow.

You may also want to check out DVFilm Raylight for Mac. With Raylight you can go back to .mxf for delivery.

    Hope this is helpful.

    Frans,
    I suspect you’re Dutch…
What you need is simple. Export to 4 channel MXF using XDcam Transfer.
(you don’t need a XDcam player to do so, it can output to harddisk)
Ster accepts that, so probably all the others do too. (Same specs from SPOT).
I’ve only tested with STER though.

    DO NOT USE EPISODE PRO.
Although the latest two versions can make compatible files, the quality is HORRIBLE.

Next step is to create correct XML and rename your output file.
Use this little util for that, quite impossible to make mistakes then.

Hi all, thanks for the comments!

I’ll try your solution Bouke. I’m from the Netherlands as you already guessed. You have some nice tools on your website!

Anders, if I look for mxf I find millions of posts. Can you describe how to export directly from FCP? Do you use the sony mxf plugin?

    Regards,

    Frans
