Consolidating is probably the best way. I must have been away on other NLEs too long having forgotten how much Avid needs to be in control of all footage. Just thought that AMA link would be the new standard in Avid editing even when using P2 footage.

Consolidating started. Thanks for your reply, John.

    Hi Brown Maty,

For some reason the files need to be on the original disks. If copied to another hard drive Avid won’t AMA link or consolidate. Haven’t yet found out why that is.

Never had any problems with FCP (7 that is). Used 3 party software for FCP7 to recoqnize MXF files. Don’t use FCP7 anymore, though.

    Thanks for replying…

FCP Classic is gone and so is the main reason to choose Mac over Windows.

Don’t rulle out the possibility of a new Mac Pro which is not a Mac Pro at all but something different and better. It might be called the Mac Pro X….

  • I have been using FCP7 and Motion just like you. Switched to Avid but still not quite sure about the best workflow between Avid and Motion. However, you don’t need to export .mov from Motion. The .motn file will import into Avid.

    Hi Joao,

Did you ever find a solution? I’m in the same situation, export from Motion looks fine (when I test i QT player), but when I import into Avid my graphics looks like a low resolution draft. Working SD 25i PAL just like you did. Have tried various settings…nothing seems to work…

I use CalDigit VR connected to my IMac with firewire 800. Works for me. Never had any problems.

Sorry, Peter, should have warned you about the complexity installing the plug-in. Happily forgot all about that part. You would have to send for an activation code after installing. The company do reply quite fast, though.
Anyway glad you found a possible solution to your problem.
Coming to think of it, buying a plug-in designed to work only with FCP7 might not be the best investment with FCPX taking over.

Don’t know about iMedia Converter. I work with Avid MXF files (SD) in Fcp7 and I use MXF import QT. I reads the files without converting. You can get a free trial:

November 17, 2011 at 9:30 pm in reply to: Quick Poll. So what’s your decision?

This post made me remember the past:

Started editing with tape (BetaSP, DigiBeta):
Sony Editor bve-910, Sony bve-2000, ACE25 AMPEX (never really figured that last one out)

    Then went on to NLE:
Avid (Mac), Media100 (Mac), Lightworks (PC). In a very surprised voice: “how can a PC be used for editing? Strange!”

Then back to tape editing (BetaSP again and DVCPRO25):
    Sony bve-910 (once again)

    Then more NLE:
    Stratos
Video Machine (don’t remember who made that one)
FAST purple/blue/liquid (and a silver version as well if I remember correctly)
Avid Liquid (formerly know as FAST liquid)
    AVID
Final Cut Pro 6 (FCS2) “Yes this is great. Wanna stay here forever”
Final Cut Pro 7 (FCS3) “Still great”

    And now:
AVID Media Composer 5.5 (and Premiere Pro lurking around the corner)

Looking back it seems silly to think that Final Cut Pro was forever. Well, just happy that I was there in time when Final Cut Pro was Final Cut Pro. Maybe the editing software of the future is yet to be seen (and I’m not thinking of FCPX).
