    Peter, Even you have no idea of electronics, spend some time looking at the block diagram, follow the path from the input connector through to the output. If you can get grasp of why and how the mixer works you will benefit with a greater knowledge in future jobs.

    By the look at the block diagram of the 802 mixer they are both the same….. except for the type of connector.

    If you do a google search on… [ red_build_14_ops_guide_v2.0.3 ] this is the operator handbook for the RED camera the pin connections for audio is on page 63.

    the 5 pin mini xlr is wired [according to the manual as]
    O/P is line level out….

    1. Left +
    2. Not connected
    3. Left –
    4. Right +
    5. Right –

    Mind you it seems strange but thats what the book says….

    If you go down the EQ, path try this…. with the parametric Equalizer BOOST the gain [to the maxium] then do a sweep of the frequency and Q curve and make the sound the worst you can. This now give the exact pinpoint of the problem then adjust the gain to negative, and hopefully it gives what your after.

    Boosting to find the problem frequencies is often used in tricky broadcast situations, as its easier to hear additions rather than reductions…..

    October 18, 2010 at 11:48 am in reply to: Cable Wiring for 5 pin XLR to 3.5mm

    Lets “assume” the mic is stereo, balanced and battery powered…. Try this for some connections

    XLR output
    Pin 1 Earth
    Pin 2 L+
    Pin 3 L-
    Pin 4 R+
    Pin 5 R-

    And 3.5mm plug
    Tip = L
    Ring = R
    Sleeve= Earth

    Use a 3 core cable,
    connect pin 2 [xlr] to the tip [3.5]
    connect pin 4 [xlr] to the ring [3.5]
    In the xlr plug join pins 3 and 5, this is then connected to the sleeve of the [3.5] using the braid of the 3 core cable.
    If and ONLY if there is hum connect pin 1 [xlr] to pins 3+5 inside the xlr connector.

    This combination should work EXCEPT on a phantom powered mic.
    Give it a try nothing to lose…..

    Seal-able plastic bags (sandwich bags or smaller) are great for storing small and fragile items in your kit.

    I initially thought the same (a short pulse) but trying to find a 2 frame light flash when spooling or cueing the video was near impossible to find. With a long pulse there are 2 cue points (start and end of pulse), the audio on a wave display is a VERY distinct block and looks so much different than the program sound.

    September 12, 2010 at 11:48 pm in reply to: Best headphones for around $150?

    I just recently got a pair of Sennheiser HD280 as the the old headphone were getting a bit knocked around over the years.
    The coiled cord a plus, the sound isolation of the phones are great but this also has a negative side, you have to remove them to talk to the Cammo, I will probably go back to the old phones for news, fast shooting or less critical work.

    August 30, 2010 at 7:49 am in reply to: Recording Interior Car Scenes

    Here is a trick I have used on several occasions in helicopters, Use 2 mics… One mic on the talent the other a mic facing away from the talent and way out of shot. Both mics are recorded as separate signals and then in post prod. Track 2 the (FX track) is phased reversed and if needed EQ’d to BOOST the problem noise and mixed under track 1 the (dialogue track)to reduce the the background car noise…. Give it a try on a drive one day the results can be very useful.
    This is the same principle of how a noise canceling mic works

    I can’t give you an exact answer on those questions, I suspect some form of abbreviation.

    My advice is to look, learn, ask questions, listen if you go into a job with an open mind and a friendly attitude its amazing what you come away with.
