One negative side of the Sony M10 is it uses micro SD or memory micro stick and its internal storage to record onto, I prefer a standard SD card that is then handed & charged to the client at the and of the shoot.
The SD card is becoming a standard in the Video, Audio and Photo world, easy to find… even at the local corner store, a bit like AA batteries.
XLR inputs and phantom power are a plus also.

The use of 5D & 7D cameras has certainly changed the way things happen, some good some bad but it is what it is…..
To back-up the SD 702 maybe a Zoom H4n [I know its not up to the same standard] but its a backup and better than recording on the camera itself.
Use a larger GB card and fresh batteries and let it wild record the entire shoot rather than stop start.
Have we got complacent with lower cost gear, back in the 1/4 tape and Nagra days there was NO backup.

Have a look at the “Zoom H4n” recorder to record the audio on…
You can use a “Rode” NTG1, NTG2 or even better the NTG3 or Sennheiser 416 mic on a boom pole and then into the Zoom H4n, Syncing up the audio to video wouldn’t be that hard as you will have a ROUGH guide track on the video recording.

The recordings sound very nice and provide a tremendous spacial imagery, giving results very much like the “Blumlein Pair” stereo recording technique.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blumlein_Pair

When the recordings are displayed as an X-Y analysis display it shows lots of negative phase imagery [this gives the open sound of the recordings which sounds good] but is almost impossible or impractical to “Broadcast” as this would be picked and corrected by automation with a 180 Deg phase shift flip by the broadcasting chain causing problems in mono sets.
Theatre and live sound using this technique would sound wonderful but be careful in the movie industry as most will end up being broadcast at some time.

Some more info on 3D sound and spacial imagery…

Im not a “Flat Earther” but would like to see and listen to a working setup, has it ACTUALLY been made or is an idea from a good salesman?
There doesn’t seem to be much info out there in documentation on physics of “Dimensional Audio” other than the sales pitch.

I have just bought a pair of Samson C02 “super cardioid” mics for a boom pole indoors. I haven’t tried them on a job at this stage but for the price you can’t go wrong, and they seem to sound nice on the tests that I have done.

December 11, 2010 at 8:41 am in reply to: Is this what a dynamics compressor is for?

Over the years I have used devices like “Optimod” and “Audimax” which were a unit that went into the audio chain just prior to the transmitter feed. [used only on more gentle settings for best results]
I have seen a domestic VHS machine in used in pause mode to use the AGC in it to level an audio feed [both up and down] but with marginal quality.
Maybe something like a Zoom H4n might work as a transfer loop through or if you are transferring to a computer based server many have a normalize setting for the audio track.

What about some heat shrink tube?

  • Jared, I was talking to a friend of mine who does Film / TV lighting recently about DSLR production, his comment “its on the way out”…the reasons being the problems you have experienced.
Panasonic have just released a camera that fills that market EXACTLY and solves the audio problems for less than $5k, and uses existing SLR lenses.
