  • YES the plugs are interchangeable….. BUT the mics are NOT, you can’t run a Sony mic in a Senni TX and you can’t run a Senni mic in a Sony Tx.

    There are some plugs that come from a world wide electronic supply company that look the same but don’t work in either as the thread is slightly different.
    “Standard” non locking versions will work as an emergency.

    You MUST have a receiver for EACH transmitter……….

    Radio mic systems work as a matched pair, the Transmitter sends to the Receiver that is tuned to it.

    You can never, never, never send 2 transmitters to one receiver it just wont work.

    Simple use an audio mixer and split the mics… 1 mic to left and 1 to right and feed the signal to BOTH cameras [assuming that both cameras will accept audio inputs], no need for an extra recorder. Save lots of time in post production.
    Use an XLR Y cord if there are no dual outputs.

    If there is 2 guests Ch1=Host… Ch2=Guest/s

    And to monitor the audio…. firstly at the mixer and then have earphones available at both cameras.

    I’ve had this happen on a couple of occasions in a city area, I now do a scan EACH and EVERY location that I do.
    It could be Telecommunications, WiFi, or some sort of data.. But a scan should solve the problem.

  • Your right David the setup and track assigning you mentioned seems fairly standard for Doco and Current Affairs type productions.
    May I also suggest you include a short gun mic, Senn 416 or Rode NTG3, find a mic that matches the sound of your Lav mics as its often easier to do quick stand-ups in close up with a gun mic than having to wire up a radio lav mic on the talent.
    BUT most important use a soundo, you / your company will look foolish doing a technology based program with poor quality equipment or crewing numbers.

    Why not do both?…. record straight to the RED camera with a breakaway cable and also do a backup recording on the H4n.
    If they use the RED audio it will save syncing time.
    Feed the H4n from the tape out socket of the FP33 mixer.
    I have used my H4n directly on a boom pole with a case made by “STRUT cases” this set up is great for a compact recording unit.

    An IFB (Interupted Fold Back) system is basicly 2 things.

    1. How to move the signal..?
    Cable or Wireless… Now you mentioned that you do location work so battery powered would be the go, I know that Sennheiser do a portable IEM (In Ear Monitor)system that is the same size as the portable radio mic TX / RX packs.
    Other brands that might be worth looking at might be Comrex, Sennheiser, Shure, Lectrosonics, MiPro. Many of the transmitteres are mains powered and some are stereo.

    Radio mics can also be used as IFB systems with the talant wearing a portable reciever. I own several Sennheiser G2 kits and have used them as an IFB set up, not ideal in loud noise level locations. I dont use an IFB that often and it seems to do the job.

    I have also tried MP3 FM transmitters on the FM radio band with marginal sucess.

    2. What signal are you going to feed the IFB system? I have often used the right channel to create the IFB feed, the director could use a mic panned right then fed to the IFB transmitter.
    Still leaving the left channel to do the audio on the shoot.
    Or another mixer could be set up to feed the transmitter (a cheap low cost audio mixer is fine as high quality is not required)

    Ed, can you please give a little more info on how you want to use the IFB system?… eg. portable location work, Outside Broadcast work, News / satellite remotes, Studio, feeding directions to tallent.
    Do you have access to mains powering for the transmitter? how many people do you want to use the system?

    Noah, let me describe it this way… If you had a group of say 5 singers or musical instruments (it could be a full choir or orchestra) positioned around a MS stereo mic on a stand.

    The person on the far left [singer 1] another singer along side [singer 2] then another [singer 3] which would be directly in front of the mic, then [singer 4] which will be further around and then finally [singer 5] will be on the far right of the microphone.

    With the way the MS mic works is by using a matrix system to create a separate left and right signals, I have found that there is a null or reduction in sound level at 45 deg to the right, so [singer 4] would be down level in the recording.

    This is caused by the sound from the [singer 4] point arriving at the 2 capsules in the mic, one of those capsules will give a + amplitude [mid mic] the other capsule signal is then inverted giving a – amplitude [side -], then when the + mid mic and – side mic are added in the matrix the level will be reduced. This how the null or level drops occurs with a MS mic setup.

    Here is a diagram that might explain the situation.
    The green line is where the maximum cancellation will occur because M+ and S- one with a positive amplitude and the other with a negative amplitude will cancel each other. (the cancelation will be a dip where the M+ & S- overlap rather than a fine line)
