I use a H4n and have had no reports of drift… mind you most of my usage has mainly been for short commercial jobs.
Is a $400 machine equal to a $4000 machine? Can you justify the additional expense?
In life you get what you pay for……… BUT for many small jobs the H4n is quite suitable for recording audio on, if you were to embark on a feature film I would say no!!!!!The H4n is a few years old in design now, there are other versions/ brands that will do the same as the H4n or better for a similar price.

Are you actually trying to do to much?
In the city I work in there has been a trend to DSLR production and those people have now realised the complexity of a good quality product, some of them have gone back to single camera shooting to tape for the simplicity.
So the question is the stunning video quality worth the problems of shooting dual system for audio?
You mentioned a rate of $200 per day for a sound operator… how much would you pay per day for a mechanic or a plumber or carpenter? How much has a sound person got invested in gear? Even a basic kit of mixer, 2x radio mics, boom, shotgun mic etc would be worth $5-10 thousand +, shouldn’t he get some return on his investment?You are not alone with your problems and I don’t think there is any easy answer.

I do a lot of Outside Broadcasts for TV companies and these days most of the sports require a player to wear a microphone.. this is how we do it, we use a GPS harness to place the radio mic TX in it.
The mic is taped (as clips often cause irritation) using medical tape to the collar at the front.
For very sweaty sports it may be worth placing the TX in a latex rubber glove, the antenna goes into one finger the mic lead comes from another finger of the glove with a small cut, the wrist is folded over and a wrap of tape makes the TX almost sweat proof
We sometimes use harnesses with a second pouch attached for a in-ear receiver pack.
In the harness we have had to place a small cut out for the antenna to protrude.

There would be several different ways to go….
1. Buy a phantom power adapter to supply the mic with power before it goes into the TX unit. But this adds extra things and can be cumbersome and often not a neat set up.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/buy/Phantom-Power-Supplies/N/42942400392. Upgrade the Sennheiser plug in TX unit to a SKP 200 or SKP 300 as these units will supply phantom power. The SKP 100 doesn’t supply phantom (which you have)

If you already have a Rode NTG1 buy a Rode NTG2, this will give you an extra mic for your kit as well. Many mic manufacturers produce a battery powered short shotgun mic. ie. Rode, Sennheiser, Beyer Dynamic, Audio Technica, AKG, Sony.

The Sennheiser G3 systems are often regarded as the base level for Pro’s. and one system would exhaust your budget.
In the lower price range Azden is mentioned often. [not that I have used them] I use Sennheiser an wouldn’t like to go down much on that.

Its a simple process and only takes a few minutes…
1. Turn on RX 1 (but NOT the TX).. do a scan it will then come up with some suitable frequencies available. Set the RX to one of those.
2. Turn on TX 1 and set the frequency to the same as RX 1.
Leave the TX 1 turned on and then repeat the process for unit 2 (then 3), (then 4), (then 5) etc.
By adding each unit in this way and leaving them turned on after tuning it blocks out these used frequencies for the next unit therefore you eliminate interference between units, after 4-5 units you need to get a bit more involved in frequency selection because of harmonic problems.

Have you used the “scan” function on both units?…
Many years ago radio mics were set and forget with frequency choice but these days there is so much RF around you may have do a frequency scan at each new location. Mobile Phones, Tablet computers etc etc.
If it continues to be a problem have a look at one of these “RF Explorer” an absolute amazing thing to have for radio mic users.

Inside the 3.5 mm connector the wiring of the Senni mic is totally different to the Sony connections.
