Just get another harddrive SATA II 7200rpm, 500gig or a 1TB, what you can afford and use it for video capture files, you should be able to do a few layers video. Western Digital Black 1TB are going for around $100 or less

There should not be any problem with a CS3 captured .mpeg from a Z1, you also mentioned that the original project file wouldn’t load either, do other projects and Z1 files work ok? also your computer specs could help to find a solution.

If it was recorded on a Z1 there should be no problem using the file, you didn’t mention what version Ppro you are using, you could try reinstalling as suggested, but first try rebuilding the Plug-in cache file, you do that by holding down the shift key when starting Ppro till the project selection screen appears, it basically making a new preferences file, this can sometimes get corrupted and cause all kinds of problems. -

What brand/model cam was it recorded on?

AC3 is Dolby audio, it requires less space than PCM or Mpeg, I don’t know your computer specs, but usually what I do with DV is to use the dynamic link to bring the timeline with chapter markers into Encore, I use two computer monitors and setup Ppro on one and Encore on the other. -
The cam is not too bad, its the avchd thats the problem, it can choke a i7, win7 64, and enough ram, to edit in Ppro it runs ok with Neoscene, and also Neoscene in Edius 5.12, Edius also has its own intermediate coded “HQ” which will run it when converted, but HQ is proprietary for GrassValley, the only thing that runs it ok natively is Grass Valley’s low end NLE EdiusNeo with “boost”, a software add-on, soon to be added to Edius with the coming v5.5 upgrade, Adobe should do something similar with the pending CS5??? hopefully, the intermediate codecs(10bit, 4:2:2) even though they can run it have drawbacks with file sizes, can run 30gigs/hr or more depending on quality settings, raid needed if multilayered.

If you export with Media Encoder don’t mux the result use elemental streams, I perfer to encode in Encore and use AC3 audio.
