720×576 is Pal SD DV(firewire), it can be either 16:9 or 4:3, and its fairly high resolution(over 500 tv lines) compared to composite(USB Dongle) and SD broadcast(270-340 tv lines), your PD150 will shoot in SD WS, although it does WS by cropping the video vertically, to get to a 16:9 aspect and DSPing it back to 720×576 since you’re in PAL land you have more vertical resolution so its not as soft as cropped video across the pond. -
Composite is analog video, S-video is analog, and some component is analog.

The newer tapeless cams use USB to transfer files, but the current prosumer and pro tape cams use firewire for video and USB for images, some flash memory units use firewire, HP has a bad mindset for legacy items -

Old photos probably, its just like the dv6 Carol Ann bought, new model same model number, I’ve got a dv6 here I bought for a family member, It has Express54, 4pin firewire plus the rest of the ports including a VGA which usually isn’t included anymore in most models. -

Thats a bunch of donkey dust, I don’t particularly like Mac products, they are a bit expensive for what you get and are hyped to death, but sony cams work with them -

When you bought yours’ they had it, I know because I helped someone configure a custom dv8 a month or so ago, two days ago I was doing the same for someone else and there is no port listed and thats basically with all new models. I checked further and found out they don’t consider it necessary.Partial listing for dv8t

Problem is the laptop they sold you is a entertainment laptop, they no longer have express card slots and firewire which is necessary for serious editing, totally useless for editing, you have to be very careful when buying a laptop for editing purposes, HP doesn’t even have a express card slot in their dv8 series anymore, it appears they are cutting corners to save money. -

Sounds like a low res capture device particularly if its just three rca connectors(red,white,yellow) you should also mention the brand/model of the camcorder you are using so we know what its capable of outputing -

Best to use a internal drive (unless its a laptop), if a external is necessary a eSATA is best unless you have USB3 -
