  • depending on the version of C4D you have the Polygon Reduction Tool might be a way to go

not going to have time for tests (probably) until tomorrow but either you can use the reflectance channels in one material or stack materials (Mix) on the box but either way you are not going to see the gold foil reflect anything or the varnish looking ‘right’ unless you have an environment to reflect and lights placed in exactly the right place to reflect back to the camera. That’s just the way it always is in real life and in 3D with anything reflective.
If you take a box like that with shiny bits into a darkened room with not much light and you have to move it around to get the light just right to see the shine. Same thing here excepting you have tons of control of where the lights will go.

  • don’t know from experience myself but this page says NVLink was slightly slower https://www.legitreviews.com/redshift-benchmark-gpu-render-times-with-geforce-rtx-2070-2080-2080-ti_208699 (down below the Age of Vultures graph).

In the Redshift FAQs is this – https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rP5nKyPQbPm-5tLvdeLgCt93rJGh4VeXyhzsqHR1xrI/edit

“Finally, it should be noted that the VRAM of multiple GPUs is not combined together! I.e. if you have a 4GB GPU and an 8GB GPU installed on your system, these do not add up to 12GB! Each GPU can only use it’s own VRAM. This might change in the future, though with the introduction of NVLink. NVLink is a “bridge” that can connect two GPUs together so that they can share each other’s memory. This comes at a performance penalty which might or might not be considerable in some cases. Redshift does not support NVLink today but we are planning (and have started work) on implementing it.”

So it looks like they say there will be a performance hit but that once implemented (and it isn’t yet) that they could share memory rather than the current state of memory not being shared across cards. Though there is always OOC…

so you do have the reflectance channel, that will make it possible to add the varnish by adding another reflectance layer and limiting it’s area with the Layer Mask inside that new layer. As for the gold foil perhaps it will be the same sort of thing. It would be useful to see a reference image of what you are going for at least.

November 30, 2018 at 5:22 pm in reply to: PROBLEM with boole + hair object !

it is possible with your setup if you render the hair as geometry but that is really slow and is prone to boole errors in my tests. I would reveal the hair with a gradient in the hair materials length parameter and reveal the underlying continents with the same gradient in an alpha. It needs a bit of trickery though, since the hair is grown on separate ‘islands’ of polys that make up the map each island will have growth across it unless you override with a UVW tag in the Hair/Advanced tab. I removed the tag on the Extrude, added a material, set the projection to Spherical then did a Tags/Generate UVW Coordinates to get a spherical tag that I then dragged into the hair advanced tab.

  • there is an easier way to post files, just drag and drop the file into the window with your text and it will upload it and pop a link in for you.

I don’t think there is a private message system in this forum (or I haven’t seen it used). Since only the house shell and the box are of interest for your last problem, can you just strip the furniture and the car etc and send that?

renders properly here (R20) and at work (R20 and R17)

it looks like only the last set of clones are the problem, are you caching only those or everything?
