I replicated one of Calder’s mobiles in After Effects using expressions and parenting.

Set the anchor points of the pieces to the point where they connect to the wires. Use wiggle expressions to animate the X and Y rotations (these can be tied to expression controls for more finesse). Parent the pieces and use a null to drive the whole thing.

I’m assuming you mean “Import a Photoshop file with text and have After Effects recognize it as live type.”

Import the PS file as a Composition Cropped layers then open the Comp in AE.

From the Layer menu select Convert to Editable Text

  • It may be possible to use the Depth Matte or ID Matte, though in your case I’m not sure how.

I know that 3DSMax file exported with RLA data can use the above to achieve DOF and other effects

Depending on how you’ve exported your 3D file it may contain the information you require to achieve the effect your want.

Is it not there in the Preset folder or just not showing up in the Effects and Presets panel?

If the latter is the case then from the Effects and Presets flyout menu choose Show Presets.

Otherwise I agree with Aharon: contact Adobe.

Yeah Dave, I’ve been looking for that one too! Let me know if you find it.

Simen, what you ask is possible in a tightly scripted fashion. You could write a script that generates a Compostion with most of what you seek. Start by checking out Dan Ebberts’ excellent site motionscript.com.

I’m not sure whether or how After Effects handles file I/O so you may need to import the files first, but I’ll leave that discussion to the real experts.

I’m running CS3 on a MacPro (2008) with the nVidia 8800 GT and 10GB of RAM.Mostly without problems. I’ve been working for weeks without a crash.

OpenGL should be off, its not well implemented anyway. Check your multiprocessor settings. I’ve edited my prefs to allow only 4 cores to be used.

Do you have any legacy plug-ins that may run under Rosetta? Toss them out if you do.

Run the recent firmware update for the MacPro.

Dan and Darby thank you both. Dan’s solution worked for me, and thanks to Darby I now understand the problem clearly.
