Press the period key on the numeric keypad, this will play the audio without rendering any animation.

Use the asterisk key on the numeric keypad while the sound previews to place markers for your cue points.

If you’re using a laptop without a numeric keypad, the keyboard shortcuts are listed under Composition > Preview and Layer > Add Marker.

If you’ve placed the Solid layer below the Camera or in between any 3D layers it will break the render order of the 3D spaces.

Place it at the top of the layer stack so that is is layer # 1, of nest the 3D Composition in another Comp and add the vignette there.

[Adam Young] “not just fly from left to right… but to be able to turn there (sic) backs to the camera and fly away, then move back and fly towards the camera and generally swoop around..”

If you need to see the birds from several angle (side, front, back etc) you won’t be able to do this with Particular, it will require a true 3D program.

Look at Maya or Cinema 4D.

[Walter Soyka] “If you want to geek out on the RSS Visualizer, you can install the Developer Tools (from your Mac OS disk), to get Quartz Composer, which is a node-based, visual programming environment. You can then open, view, and edit the RSS Visualizer, which is a .qtz file located in System > Library > Screen Savers.

Very interesting Walter, thanks for the tip!

I’m not aware of a template for this but it should be simple to replicate. If you enable 3D for the type layer, leave the type left aligned and animate Y Rotation, you’re almost there.

To have the layers follow the headline you can use the valueAtTime expression and an offset value something like this:

    thisComp.layer(index-1).transform.yRotation.valueAtTime(time -.2))

Have you altered the Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences?

Have you tried trashing After Effects Preferences?

Have you checked Activity Monitor to see whether it provides any clues to the slowdown?

  • [leif falk] “it would have been much more effective to edit one ae-project while rendering another”

Have you considered the Background Renderer Script?

  • Any Rosetta dependent plug-ins?

Rosetta (PPC code support) is gone in Lion.

Here’s a tutorial on KeyEd Up.

    https://ae.tutsplus.com/tutorials/workflow/enhanc-your-workflow-keyed-up-a-shortcut-editor/

0 on the numeric keyboard is used for RAM Preview, on my laptop (a Mac) control + 0 invokes RAM preview.
