In the absence of 3D Stroke – an excellent and indispensable product – you may be able achieve something similar with CC. Mr. Mercury.
Here’s as sample. You can tweak the settings to suit your needs. The Base Comp is set to 60 fps for smoother motion then Time Remapped in the final. Copies of the Base are scaled, rotated and re-positioned to suit.

You’re correct in my case. This has bothered me for ages.
There were no layer styles in the PSD file, nor any styles visible on any of the Composition layers, removing the layer styles as you suggested resolved the issue.

I’m running CS6 on Snow Leopard, no issues at all. You can download a trial version from Adobe to test performance on your machine.

There may be an easier way, OSX allows you to customize shortcuts for any application from the keyboard System Preferences.

Without knowing any of the specifics of the Composition (frame dimensions, effects used, type of footage), nor whether you’re using multi-processing, I suspect that you’ve filled the RAM buffer.
Launch the Activity Monitor and check the RAM usage as the render progresses, my guess is that you’re running out of RAM and the Mac is using VM which is several orders of magnitude slower than RAM, if so you’ll see a large number of Page outs.
16GB isn’t very much RAM these days for After Effects, one option is to use the Secret Preferences to have AE purge memory after X number of frames have rendered.

I should mention that to keep the displayed values to whole numbers change the expression to read:
Math.round(effect(“value”)(“Slider”))

Dave, I think he may be referring to the influence of easy-eased keyframes which defaults to 33%.
I don’t believe there is a way to change the default but I think it could be automated using an expression, perhaps check in the expression forum.
