  • Is it worth running CS6 on 1st Gen MAc Pro?

Posted by Chris Heuer on October 31, 2012 at 2:21 pm

Hello. I am trying to decide whether or not to upgrade from CS5 to CS6.

I have an 8 core 1st Generation Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon 1900 Graphics card and 16 gigs of RAM. I can’t upgrade to any of the cards that Adobe lists on their support page as “Approved” for CS6’s GPU enhancements.

Will CS6 run at a reasonable pace or is the software getting too GPU-centric for older systems (in other words, would it be slower on a system like mine?).

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Ahhh. I did fail to add, I am running Snow Leopard. I think I can go as far as Lion but from what I understand Mountain Lion is not possible.

I’m running CS6 on Snow Leopard, no issues at all. You can download a trial version from Adobe to test performance on your machine.

Good point! I always forget about that. Thanks for the input. I have been getting bummed with my hardware limitations. I hope the Mac Pro update in mid 2013 is significant… and maybe a little early.

A 2006 Mac Pro would get smoked by a modern MBP or iMac…

But if you can in fact run CS6, the Global Performance Cache could be a huge performance increase for you. As always, max out the RAM in your system and get a fast SSD for the cache for the best performance.

Worth trying, you can do the 30 day free trial.

At work I run CS6 on a mac pro 2,1, 10gb ram, with the same video card. I definitely get better render times on my own PC and my macbook pro but a lot of work gets done on the mac pro still, mostly working in 720p and standard def using much of the production suite. I usually do advanced AE comps at home or on my macbook if it is complex and/or needs raytracing or element 3d.

Thanks for that info. Element 3D was one of the other plug-ins I was pretty sure would suffer on this system. I had a little hope the Radeon card would work with it but was pretty sure it wouldn’t.
