With a DVD, simply copy it to your hard drive . . then change the file extension to .mpg . . then import it into Premiere.
I have done this, and it works.

Make sure that NONE of the files have the same file name.

Keep as few clips in your Project Panel as possible, and keep only one timeline to open.
I am presently working on a documentary in which I have shot about 80 interviews avering 30 minutes each . . plus hundreds of m.o.s. scenes, etc. and I have no problem. The program is running about 2 1/2 hours, and I have divided it into 5 timelines. It only takes about 90 seconds to open all media. I cannot imagine why it would take an hour for anything, even Gone With The Wind.

Buying and installing a Matrox card would be your biggest help. It’s amazing how many people go with CS3 or CS4, yet without a Matrox card. I personally have the Matrox AXIO card, and I seldom have to render.

There is a very inexpensive software that Izotope makes and I used it all of the time for separating unwanted noises from the voice track. This is better than anything you will find in Soundbooth, and it is only $349.

I reboot every 3 hours in order to eliiminate the low memory problem . . . it works.

Don’t know about the pixel problems, but can help you with the popup window problem about memory, etc.
You need to reboot when you see those windows appear. In fact, if you are dealing in large project with lots of source material, then I suggest rebooting every 3 hours. This is what I am doing with my current project, which is quite long (over 2 hours), and with about 50 hours of source material.
It is better to reboot BEFORE those popup windows occur.

I can assure you that Moving Pictures by Stage Tools is THE ONLY software to consider. I used it on my old Edit system, and I am using it with Premiere CS4. It is (1) inexpensive (2) easy to use, you can learn it in ten minutes (3) the smoothest pans and zooms on the planet.I really would not consider anything else . . it is simply the best. There is no need to shop further.
