Spoiler alert, I’m not sure I saw a single soft edge wipe in Star Wars today.

I heard the big green ratings screen at the front was a free motion template. Really streamlined the whole process.

  • How are you duplicating your project? Are you perhaps duplicating as a snapshot? It’s hard to follow what you were describing, but if you don’t understand snapshots I can see how it’s perfectly designed behavior could be confusing. When you create a snapshot, you are creating an infallible moment in time. All compound clips within will become self contained so that one can’t change a compound and screw up the snapshot. IOW they lose all affiliation with compounds in the event. If you want to reveal the compound in the event, you’d have to match frame it from the snapshot and magically it appears in the event. You’ll find it also at that point increments the name of the compound with a number.

So generally, when you make a duplicate for emergency backup purposes / versioning, you would use a snapshot – and continue editing the original, NOT the snapshot.

If you don’t like this methodology, you can just create a regular duplicate where all compounds wil point to the same media. Editing that compound will change all duplicates. This would be the desired behavior if you were making a derivative work like another episode where perhaps the show intro is a compound and you’d want to change it across all episodes at once. But if there are other compounds within the project that you might edit that you wouldn’t want the change to ripple through (like maybe a credit roll that changes every week) then you’d have to remember to make that compound link to a new master before you edit it.

Ripple Training just pointed out another aspect- If you use the hot keys shift cmd D to make a quick snapshot. But if you don’t click back into your sequence before you hit spacebar, it’ll open the snapshot in the timeline window. Perhaps your issue is somehow related to this procedure. Sometimes you can click and play things in the event but for some reason the focus doesn’t change and weird things happen. I’ve actually had video playing in the event viewer and the regular viewer at the same time before.

This also brings up a good question. Why is there a pull-down menu setting for timeline frame rate, and then right underneath it a “playback” frame rate FILL-IN box? Isn’t that just asking for trouble? I get it that it’s great to be able to play back at a different frame rate (ok, I really don’t, seems pointless) and options are always good, but this is poor interface design. It shouldn’t be a fill in box, but a pull down that defaults to “same as timeline frame rate” with other standard frame rate choices and then at the bottom “custom” where THEN a custom field box appears or becomes active.

There is absolutely zero benefit to El Capitan that I can tell. I was hoping for this whole Metal thing, but I guess nobody is even doing anything with it. You’d think Resolve would be all over it as their playback performance needs something.

I installed El Cap on an external partition and played with it. You still can’t use dual monitors full screen for crap. Metal hasn’t done anything special for anything and there’s heaps of new bugs. Yay?

Yes it was FCPXML and the choice for using differing frame rates was set to FCPX in the XML import.

But yes, you are correct. It is playing the frames natively. So it’s not actually treating them as any frame rate at all. Just frames. If I set the project output to be 29.97 it plays them too quickly because it’s playing them at 29.97. If I put them in a 29.97 timeline, same thing. Unless I set the playback to be 23.98 and then of course they’re the only clips playing correctly. It’s simply conforming frames to frames 1:1. That’s ridiculous. I’ll try another XML import. I haven’t used resolve for a real true edit yet. So this is all good learning.

You’re talking about two different things. In El Capitan you’re going to have issues with the TC display (not the breakout window). Look closely at the screen shot and you’ll see a nasty line of junk through the numbers and also the hr min sec fr type across the bottom is offset. They don’t line up with their numerical counterparts above. It doesn’t affect anything but the visual.

No love for hitfilm round here I guess. I haven’t played with the latest, but isn’t it trying to do everything?

  • It actually changes every time you launch the app. But what about the words under the counter? Are they still misaligned?

To my point earlier, are we talking about the raid replacement drive or the backup drive? I’m pretty sure you need to replace the raid drive with same model. Isn’t that why manufacturers keep selling the old models for more money than the newer better ones?
