You’re going to have to at least post a couple specs before anyone can answer. For all we know you’re using an imac G3 with FCP 1.0.
Specifically, the OS & FCP version, what system, and what video format.

Oh geez I’m just kidding. But the thought did cross my mind that I hoped his clients weren’t reading!
I remember when they added the audio levels adjustment. I think it was version 2. That’s why I thought of it. I was editing with producers over my shoulder with version 1.2 and I remember how I felt when they said that the levels were too low across different parts of the program. Now if it was the whole sequence, I could’ve nested it and raised the volume of just the nest. But when large sections weren’t just right, you had to go in and adjust every clip by hand. They were a little bewildered that that was the only way to do it. But it was. Especially for interview montages that involved music, VO, sot, sfx, and nat. You really couldn’t just copy and paste attributes either. And when working with DV, you couldn’t even ride analog levels on the deck or anything.
But when they added the cmd+option+l that has to be the biggest time saving improvement they ever did. Instantly I could do an audio mix in a few minutes instead of a few hours.
I don’t use multicam yet, but I’m sure some people will look back someday and wonder how they ever got along without it.

Just to set the record straight, this is not an annoying quirk. FCP is doing exactly what you have asked it to do. Half way through the fade up you have a 50% opaqe item keyed over a 50% opaque item.

I can always tell a former windows user. The key is option, not alt. True there is a little alt written on it, but it’s the option key.
It’s always surprising what is a new function to some. I can’t even image the software functioning without that key combo. How much money do you owe your clients for all the time you spent adjusting audio clips one by one? 😛

One I use in a pinch…
Mark in, Mark out, Set autoselect tracks, Option+A
Highlights a section of the timeline you can copy any paste based on which tracks have autoselect on. Doesn’t copy the clips, but the range.

Hmmm. I find that FCP can do much more than Avid. Unless you’re talking DS. But yes, there are things it can’t do or does different. This scrolling timeline thing for example, was yet another thing I never let Avid do. It was really annoying to me. I’ve got the timeline where I want it and want it to stay there. Unless I say so. So FCP’s method of allowing me to move the timeline during playback allows much more control imho.

You might want to try creating a freeze frame instead of changing the speed to 0. Changing the speed to zero will still leave the program trying to frame blend the motion between the two frames. Also, if your image has motion, the above would be particularly ugly. Even if you created the freeze correctly. It would require deinterlacing, which essentially halfs your resolution or at a minimum softens the image considerably.
Try creating a freeze frame with the make freeze frame command. You won’t have to render either.

The clip is linked if it is underlined. Linked clips are completely different from the concept of linked selection. The little chain stands for linked selection. Meaning that selecting one portion of a linked clip, also selects the other portion. When it is on, holding down option temporarily turns it off. When it is off, option temporarily turns it on.
Isn’t this stuff covered in the first chapter of the manual or something? The hot key is right there in the menu somewhere.
I’ve never trashed my prefs either. Been using FCP since version 1.2 and never had the need. Problems were never a corrupted preferences file.

If you’re not going to make a living with it, then don’t spend money on AE and Shake. Motion, LiveType, and FCP will do ya for major paying projects.
And obviously you’ve got to get a tower. I’d probably leave out shake and AE and buy the best G5 you can get right now. Even if the intel towers came out next week, they’re not goign to be that much faster. The dual G5s are pretty competitive. Jobs just didn’t like the roadmap. The first intels are probably going to have their share of problems, and if I know Jobs, limitations. He’ll wait until the next revision to really get it right.
