Clips won’t Link in timeline?!?!??
Posted by Mauryd on October 1, 2005 at 8:01 amSo I have a bin full of clips that I digitized video & audio together. Then I drag the clip into a timeline. Both audio and video come together, but when I try to grab the video portion of the clip to move it, only the video will move or only the audio if that’s the part of the clip that I grab. The audio stays put. I try using the Modify/Link command to make sure they’re linked. They have the underlined type to show they’re linked. Nothing works. They won’t stay together. I have to drag or command select to move audio and video together.
What gives??!?!? Any ideas??
Thanks for any help!

October 1, 2005 at 4:34 pmThere is a little green chainlink in the upper right corner of the timeline.
Also check the index or the online help for LINK. Wade through the links until you find something that sounds promising.

That’s because the default setting for the Link button is ON. You must have inadvertently hit the button or initiated the keybard shorty.
BTW: I have never trashed my prefs. Never.

October 1, 2005 at 10:09 pmSo why do the clips remained underlined when linked selection is turned off? Where as when you select a clip and use unlink from the modify menu the underline goes away.
Really, NEVER ever trashed your prefs?

October 2, 2005 at 6:03 pmTrashing Prefs is really just a fast way to solve many issues without troubleshooting.
But what ends up happening is that some very simple fixes end up going by unknown because trashing prefs is sort of a ultra wide problem solving technique that doesn’t tell you what’s really wrong.
I trash prefs if there’s a client in the room when something goes wonky on FCP because the client isn’t paying me to troubleshoot my system, They’re paying me to edit. I rarely do it when I’m unsupervised because I want and need to know what I did to make FCP act up. I’ve gone months and months and months without trashing prefs.
But, sometimes, I can’t find the problem, and I do trash my preferences. I’ve rebuilt my Avid User Prefs file several times over the years as well. Any computer file can get corrupted, especially one that is accessed as much as a Preferences file.

October 3, 2005 at 6:26 amThe clip is linked if it is underlined. Linked clips are completely different from the concept of linked selection. The little chain stands for linked selection. Meaning that selecting one portion of a linked clip, also selects the other portion. When it is on, holding down option temporarily turns it off. When it is off, option temporarily turns it on.
Isn’t this stuff covered in the first chapter of the manual or something? The hot key is right there in the menu somewhere.
I’ve never trashed my prefs either. Been using FCP since version 1.2 and never had the need. Problems were never a corrupted preferences file.

We use the option key all the time to temporarily unlink clips. I went through the whole pdf manual and it talks about Linked Selection. It doesn’t explain the difference between Linked and Linked Selection. It seem odd there is no indicator when using Linked Selection, the clips remain underlined yet the link is broken.

October 3, 2005 at 6:05 pmThanks to all of your help & suggestions.
I should have mentioned that the “link/unlink” button in the upper right corner of the timeline had no effect.
But what fixed it is trashing the prefs. I should have tried it before posting.
It’s very nice that some of you have never had to trash prefs, and I do aspire to live such a chaste and blessed life as yourselves, but both Apple FCP tech support people and AJA/io tech support people have suggested that technique in the past for misc. problems and it HAS worked. It’s certainly not something I like to do since I have to rebuild custom settings, but as debe says, sometimes I just have get back to editing ASAP and can’t afford the time to thoroughly troubleshoot.
