  • [Joe Marler] “it works fairly well but FCPX could use more optimization on thumbnail generation. “

When you mention the thumbnail issue, are you talking about thumbnails (one single frame to represent the entire clip) or filmstrips? I don’t see any bog down in thumbnails, but I only use a single thumbnail, never filmstrips, even in the timeline. The only time I use a filmstrip is when I put the browser into list view, in which case it just has to generate one single filmstrip of the clip I’m on and it doesn’t have a problem with that of course. I’m running a late 2012 27″ iMac i7.

Don’t mess with the bundle. Deleting generated files will accomplish the same thing without corrupting your library.

But I think the better solution is to create a new library using just the media you want. For example, when I’m done with a project, I select the project(s) in the browser and choose File>copy project to library>new library. This will copy only the files used in that project. So all the stuff you logged that you didn’t use in the project will be omitted.

Once you have your new library, open up the library prefs pane in the inspector and choose to consolidate all the media. I’d suggest to consolidate it internally, and not to an external folder. This keeps the library as a perfect single unit that can be transported or moved without ever risking losing the media or breaking media links. You can always consolidate it again to an external folder at a later date if that works better for your style or multi-user editing setup or what not.

The beautiful thing with all this is that if you do all this to the same drive as the original library/media, it will not take up any additional space on that drive. All the links are hard links to the media (not the files) themselves. They’re not aliases. The files can exist in multiple places at once but only take up the space of one file. You can delete the original or the new library and it won’t harm the other. The shared media will not be deleted until all hard links to it are deleted.

Give it a try. Since the media doesn’t actually get copied, it’ll only take seconds to duplicate a library that might be hundreds of gigs.

    HTH!

  • Can’t do it natively with X. Best you can do with the color board is blade the clip, have two different settings on each clip, and dissolve between them.

  • There is a distort tool. Not sure I’ve key framed that before.

  • I think if you just do it all in the viewer window and click the Keyframe button there it will take care of it. I don’t usually click the Keyframes in the inspector.

Oh awkward. Or are you messing with me? I wasn’t aware of I had or not, so I clicked on the link in the post and…. Probably did because everyone misspells my name. Didn’t realize you had website aspirations. Or are you messing with me? I set it all up quite awhile ago. Apparently there’s a big online gamer @BrettFX and it appears his name is Aaron?

I was afraid someone would say that! 🙂 I do have plans to make some demos and tutorials. Deyson Ortiz of Motion Master Templates has had some great advice on launching my own website along the way and that is one of his big recommendations as well. If anyone hasn’t seen Deyson’s https://motionmastertemplates.com or Simon’s https://www.tokyo-uk.com stuff you should check them out!

Thanks for the kind words Simon!

Thank you Walter! I think that format might have simply evolved from my desire not to hear my voice on a demo as Mr. Ubsdell suggests in the post below. Shorter is better, right? If you need a good close look at some of the controls I wanted to get them in there. Even if you have to rewind and pause. Thanks again!
