Do 1920×1080 since you can adjust the larger size down and reframe as necessary.

Also check the footage by putting a 1.85 mask over it to make sure you don’t have to reposition any shots. An editor friend of mine is going through exactly this now, as the DP and director shot 16×9 but never considered it’s native 1.78 aspect ratio.

Sounds like you found a solution.

For next time may I suggest you listen to each channel and pick the best one, then set your project to use that channel exclusively. Keeping a project with two ‘mono’ channels of varying volume might be distracting to the audience. If it’s mainly dialog then using one channel alone will work best as we’re used to dialog coming from the center channel just as in theatres. You can still add stereo music, however each track selection in Premiere should be set for what kind of audio you want.

    Shane

Not trying to hijack this thread, but couldn’t find a way to post separately.

In another post you talked about backing up projects before editing. I’m wondering how you backup during a project and at what point do you render out a full video? Do you make incremental videos or wait until final QC?

    Thanks
    Bret

  • Agree with Dave and Shane

I’ve always used an external monitor attached to a video card designed for this purposed. Only way to see properly.
I use AJA Kona card, however Blackmagic Decklink is also commonly used. They’re pricey but often good deals on ebay.

Then you can stop worrying at get back to editing. Watching your video in Premiere’s window is an exercise in frustration, same for all NLEs.

Unless you purposely want to change sizes of your video clips you should set the sequence to match your footage.

What export settings did you use? Encoding time varies a lot depending on source material/size and final output.
If you go to H264 settings there’s a whole list of output formats, including iPad.

Then there’s a separate H264 Blu-ray setting. Looks like only 1920×1080. I assume UHD would need separate codec and perhaps UHD Blu-ray drive.

I have the same issue with many same tapes to ingest. The deck you like should work. If has Firewire so you should be able to set machine control in the Capture window. Some of the pro decks use RS422 (9 pin serial) control and unless your computer has the proper port that won’t work for you.

I look at pics online and couldn’t see if it has serial connection.

Saw one on ebay for 300 bucks, others were 1000-2000

Are you sure it’s 50fps? Most DSLRs record 24, 25,30, sometimes 60, but default is 24 or 30. Either of those are normal framerates, 24 being film-style and 30 tv although both are used on tv now.

Check your settings. 25 is normal for Europe like 30 for USA. 24 is film rate universally.
