November 1, 2017 at 4:08 am in reply to: 4K media for 1920 delivery: what’s the point of shooting 4K?You can get rid of the jittery/laggy playback issues by using a Proxy Workflow in any NLE. Edit with the Proxies and then switch back to the full res video before you do your exports.
You won’t lose much if you convert to 4K ProRes except for a ton of hard drive space and the transcoding time. It only makes sense to transcode to 1920 ProRes for smooth playback if you plan on relinking back to the 4K footage before your final outputs.
You will have sharper cleaner final outputs especially when you scale up any of your clips.
As an example I’m working on a project that was shot with two Sony Cameras where A-Cam was 3840×2160 and B-Cam was set to 1920×1080. The original plan was that B-Cam was supposed to be Scaled Up and also Panned and Scanned. In the end the show has failed QC three times and will not air unless this footage is reshot properly. So now there’s budget problems plus the fact that it all will need to be reshot next June and July to match everything else.
These are the kinds of things that happen when shooters are careless and I receive all of the footage two months after all shooting has been completed.

Try trashing the Avid Databases before starting MC, hopefully this fixes the problem. If that doesn’t work then try this. Use Disk Utility to do a fresh Partitioning of a drive before copying the media to it. Once it’s copied delete all of the Avid Databases in the numbered folders and make sure that it’s the only Media Drive connected to the system before you start up Avid.
Note: There are two Database Files in each numbered folder that are named msmMMOB.mdb and msmFMIR.pmr. Trash these and empty your Trash Can before starting Avid.

Interesting.
I do have to say that I stopped buying cheap USB 3 Cards a few years back because of random, annoying, anomalous issues that would crop up when I was using them. Most of the issues I ran into were with ProTools so I bit the bullet and put Sonnet USB Cards in all my systems instead and have not had any issues since then. There cards are stupidly overpriced at up to five or six times the price of the cheaper cards but in the end so many time consuming problems have gone away that they’ve ended up saving me loads of time and money.
I think the problem is that the cheaper cards have very little or no buffer/cache on them and this leads to issues with handshaking and bidirectional communications between devices. Even though Avid and ProTools seem to be moving data in only one direction I believe that they are quite frequently looking for feedback from devices via handshaking. If they don’t receive it on demand then issues arise.
This is just a theory but who knows maybe I’m actually barking up the right tree with this convoluted theory.

What version of MC do you have and what version was on the other system.
Have you tried going back to an older version of MC to see if it fixes the problem.
Are both systems Mac or PC or is there one of each.
Have you checked what the HD your Consolidating to is Formatted as and what type of Partition Table it has. I would recommend a GUID Partiton Table.Have you tried deleting all of the Databases in the MXF floder(s) and letting Avid rebuild them. I’ve run into odd issues a couple of times going from Mac to PC or PC to Mac and trashing all of the Databases fixed those issues.
Just some suggestions to try, hope one of these fixes the problem.

Have you checked to see if you are using the correct AMA XAVC Plugin Version.
You should be Transcoding rather than Consolidating your Media if I properly understand what you are trying to do.
Consolidation is mainly meant for “Consolidating” a finished Sequence with handles to save space and for Archival Purposes.
Transcoding is meant for converting your media from it’s original Codec to an Avid DNx Codec.I see far to many posts about people Consolidating there Footage when they really should be Transcoding it.

This type of post is ever so common.
Computer Monitors should really never be used for Colour Correction.
Something like an AJA or a Decklink Card should be your output to a proper REC-709 Monitor.
Sending the output to a good TV Via HDMI would be better than a Computer Monitor but even HDMI should be avoided.
Lastly there are a lot of really poor 4K Computer Monitors out there and unless you want to spend a lot of coin on a pair you may not get very good results. Especially when it come to Colour.\”MY MEDIA/PROJECT MOTTO: If you think three copies of your Media or Projects are enough. Take a moment to place a value on them and then maybe add two more.

I don’t know if it can be done in PP but if the Caption Company is using a higher end piece of software like MacCaption or Caption Maker they won’t have to re-time each and every CC file from scratch.
If you were to send them the new slowed down videos there is a feature in them called “Stretch/Shrink TimeCode”.
All they have to do is find the T/C for the last Caption and enter the new T/C for it.
The T/C will now be stretched to fit the slowed down videos.
I have done this process several times and it works great.
It takes less than a couple of minutes per video to do so it shouldn’t cost to much either.\”MY MEDIA/PROJECT MOTTO: If you think three copies of your Media or Projects are enough. Take a moment to place a value on them and then maybe add two more.

October 15, 2017 at 6:24 am in reply to: Replacing clip but keeping edit points and effectsThere has to be a better way to do this but here’s a suggestion that will at least save you some time recutting each version. Just make sure that each of the different language clips are the exact same length, down to the frame.
Make a new Bin in the original Project.
ALT+Drag the Original Sequence and the Clip you want to replace to this new Bin.
Create a new Project with the same settings as the first Project.
Move that Bin to the new Projects Folder.
Open the new project then rename the Sequence and Clip to reflect the new Language.
Batch import the Spanish.mov over top the Renamed Clip. This will do what you want and as far as I know (without actually trying it myself) and not affect the original sequence in the original project. You should also be able to move that Bin back to your original Projects folder so you can keep everything in the one Project. Next, you should be able to just Rinse and Repeat with the two Projects for any further languages that are required.
