  • 1 – Premier is likely generating -12dbFS tone but your seeing -6dbFS on your meters because the left and right tones are being combined to mono. Check your mixer pan settings for the tone. Combining two tone signals of -12db will give you -6db (double the volume).

2 – -12dbFS was a standard that Premier, Final Cut 7 and many cameras like the Canon XL-1 used at one time but was never acceptEd industry wide. As an FYI so were -16 and -18dbFS standards but mainly for music. The -20dbFS is not set in most NLE’s because of the different so called standards that exist. Finally -20dbFS is the most common standard that is used especially in America.

3 – No don’t apply any gain to anything, fix you mixer settings and remember that the most common standards are tone at -20dbFS and the program audio should only occasionally peak at -10dbFS. Unless you were sent different specs the program audio will bounce for the most part between -20 and -10 except for really quite passages.

I kinda thought that was the kind of timeline you were working with but all is not lost. This is the kind of thing that I do, that is helping workflows. I really didn’t spend much time on it as I’ve used something similar to this a couple of times before.

I can certainly see why you may want this however to accomplish this it would need to be timeline based, especially when cutting back and forth between cameras in a scene.

Here’s a long winded way of doing what you want but it works and even though it seems like it will take forever to do this I was able to add this to almost 900 Clips in less than a minute. Still much faster than typing this in.

    Prerequisites –
Reveal Comments Column in Resolve and type a 1 into this column for the first clip only.
(I used the Comments Column but you can use another one if this doesn’t suit you)
Install Libre or Open Office on your Computer. (both are free office replacements)
(I used Libre Office so some of the functions will be in different places in Open Office)
Make sure clips are ordered properly in the Media Pool.

Warning, do this on a test project and do not modify any of the metadata in any other column.

    Let’s go.

Now select all of the clips in the media pool that you want this sequence added to and select File/Export Metadata/Selected Media Pool Clips…. Resolve will set the file name to metadata which you can change or not, it’s up to you. Resolve exports a CSV file that you will now open with Libre/Open Office.

A box will open like in the Grab-1 Image. Make sure that under Separator Options the Comma is the only separator that is selected and select OK. Once the file opens look for the Comments Column and select all of the fields in that column that require the numbered sequence. Don’t select the field that’s labeled Comments though. Now go to Sheet/Fill Cells/Fill Series… and select this. Set the Dialogue box that opens like you see in the Grab-2 Image and select OK. You should now see a sequence of numbers in the Column. Next right click in the same Column with the same fields that were selected before and select Format Cells…. A dialogue box opens as in Grab-3 and set the Leading Zeros to 3 (for 1 to 999 clips) and select OK. Now save the file and if it asks to change the file format select Keep Existing.

Now back in Resolve we may need to reselect the clips in the Media Pool before we can import this modified CSV file. Select File/Import Metadata/Selected Media Pool Clips… and import the modified CSV file. Set the dialogue box as you see in Grab-4 and the Comments column should now be populated with the numbered sequence that you created in Libre Office. Now go to the Data Burn-In Dialogue box and select one of the Custom Text Options. I wasn’t able to get Libre Office to auto sequence a field with text in it like S001, S002 etc. so this is the workaround. In the Custom Text box type S%Comments and hit enter.

You should now have the Data Burn-In that you wanted.

This % thing can also be used in the Delivery Page to Transcode Clips with any combo of column metadata you would like. i.e. %Scene-%Take would give you a filename of what’s in the Scene and Take Columns separated by a hyphen.

Use one of the Custom Text options and in the Dialogue Box start off by typing the Percent (%) Character. You can now choose any column to be part of the burn in. If you type %na as an example then every column that has an na in its name will show up.

Even if your hardware is not connected but is still in your machine with the drivers installed full screen playback will not work.

  • It’s also possible that the OWC Dock doesn’t support this dual monitor configuration so get in touch with OWC and see what they say. The solution would be to run one monitor off the Dock DP Port and the other off a TB-3 to DP/DVI or HDMI Dongle. It’s an extra expense but at least it will work.

This is not really all that out of the ordinary. Every piece of software uses it own proprietary code for the viewers. The viewers are essentially proxy views of the media so how each type of different code interprets and displays the proxy will be different. Part of the difference can also be how this code deals with and interprets your desktop colour space. Resolve has a setting somewhere that allows you to use the Mac Desktop Colour Space if you want but I do believe it’s best to keep it turned off.

I’m guessing that you mean the .dmg file, if so your on a Mac. It’s always recommended that you uninstall before unpgeading.
