Clip name burn-in
Posted by Ido Shor on December 17, 2019 at 10:46 amHEYA
been searching for the clip name burn in option on the Data Burn-In workspace window and I can’t i find it.
meaning, I want the name I gave the specific clip to appear in the burn in.
I am pretty sure it was available on older ver. (I am using 16.1.2.026) but for some reason I can’t seem to locate it.There is:
Record file Name – NOPE.
Source clip Name – NOPE
SHOT – NOPEALSO, is there any way to automatically name the clips in the a certain reel according to their chronological order?
thanks!

December 17, 2019 at 1:04 pmUse one of the Custom Text options and in the Dialogue Box start off by typing the Percent (%) Character. You can now choose any column to be part of the burn in. If you type %na as an example then every column that has an na in its name will show up.
“MY MEDIA/PROJECT MOTTO: If you think three copies of your Media or Projects are enough. Take a moment to place a value on them and then maybe add two more. Hard Drives are now stupidly cheap. A RE-SHOOT AND YOUR TIME AREN’T.”

December 17, 2019 at 7:33 pmThis % thing can also be used in the Delivery Page to Transcode Clips with any combo of column metadata you would like. i.e. %Scene-%Take would give you a filename of what’s in the Scene and Take Columns separated by a hyphen.

December 18, 2019 at 3:10 pmHey Brent
I think you misunderstood me there, ☺ but I think it was partly my mistake of not being so clear.
I asked about the burn in of a clip# according to it’s place on the timeline. meaning the first clip will get a S001 the 2cd – S002 and so on. since I have more then 200clips in the timeline, I want to find a way to do it without naming each clip seperatly. that why I thought the burn in opt could be a good solution for that.
any thoguhts?
thanks

December 23, 2019 at 11:02 pmI’m curious how renaming clips via burn in that doesn’t relate to the actual clip name is useful? I’m sure Blackmagic might be able to add that feature if there is a good reason. I’m not sure what that reason might be.

December 24, 2019 at 7:57 amIt’s not really renaming the clip per se. because the clips on the media tab window won’t be effected by that.
it’s only a representation in the burn-in to what clip no# it is on the timeline. this can be useful if you have hundreds of clips (like in my case) and you don’t want to spend time on re-naming each-one separately.
btw, there IS a tab that gives no# to each clip according to the order of the edit in the Edit tab which is called Edit Index, but the burn in doesn’t take it’s information from that window…. so I guess there is no way to link the Custom Text option that Brent Marginet was referring to.
I admit this is not one of the more interesting of threads around creative-cow…. but if a solution could be found, it WILL save time for many editors to come.
Thanks!

December 25, 2019 at 6:24 pmHere’s a long winded way of doing what you want but it works and even though it seems like it will take forever to do this I was able to add this to almost 900 Clips in less than a minute. Still much faster than typing this in.
Prerequisites –
Reveal Comments Column in Resolve and type a 1 into this column for the first clip only.
(I used the Comments Column but you can use another one if this doesn’t suit you)
Install Libre or Open Office on your Computer. (both are free office replacements)
(I used Libre Office so some of the functions will be in different places in Open Office)
Make sure clips are ordered properly in the Media Pool.Warning, do this on a test project and do not modify any of the metadata in any other column.
Let’s go.
Now select all of the clips in the media pool that you want this sequence added to and select File/Export Metadata/Selected Media Pool Clips…. Resolve will set the file name to metadata which you can change or not, it’s up to you. Resolve exports a CSV file that you will now open with Libre/Open Office.
A box will open like in the Grab-1 Image. Make sure that under Separator Options the Comma is the only separator that is selected and select OK. Once the file opens look for the Comments Column and select all of the fields in that column that require the numbered sequence. Don’t select the field that’s labeled Comments though. Now go to Sheet/Fill Cells/Fill Series… and select this. Set the Dialogue box that opens like you see in the Grab-2 Image and select OK. You should now see a sequence of numbers in the Column. Next right click in the same Column with the same fields that were selected before and select Format Cells…. A dialogue box opens as in Grab-3 and set the Leading Zeros to 3 (for 1 to 999 clips) and select OK. Now save the file and if it asks to change the file format select Keep Existing.
Now back in Resolve we may need to reselect the clips in the Media Pool before we can import this modified CSV file. Select File/Import Metadata/Selected Media Pool Clips… and import the modified CSV file. Set the dialogue box as you see in Grab-4 and the Comments column should now be populated with the numbered sequence that you created in Libre Office. Now go to the Data Burn-In Dialogue box and select one of the Custom Text Options. I wasn’t able to get Libre Office to auto sequence a field with text in it like S001, S002 etc. so this is the workaround. In the Custom Text box type S%Comments and hit enter.
You should now have the Data Burn-In that you wanted.

January 2, 2020 at 9:56 amholy XXX brent!
thats quite an effort you did there. thanks a lot!!Unfortunately what I am dealing with is a pre-edited timeline. (imported through AAF),
which means the clips are already in the timeline in a certain order which I want to follow along.the only way I think your process can be of use it if I could somehow export the data from the EDIT index window instead, make the changes according to that order and then import it back to the media window…. mmm…
is that even possible?
tnx! -

January 3, 2020 at 5:36 pmI kinda thought that was the kind of timeline you were working with but all is not lost. This is the kind of thing that I do, that is helping workflows. I really didn’t spend much time on it as I’ve used something similar to this a couple of times before.
I can certainly see why you may want this however to accomplish this it would need to be timeline based, especially when cutting back and forth between cameras in a scene.
