If you recorded in 4.2.0 it doesn’t matter which out you use, it’s still 4.2.0. Just use your media card reader, copy the footage over and import to your software.
You can set your software such as Final Cut Pro to 4.2.2, but your source footage is still 4.2.0 that has been upconverted. It doesn’t improve your footage.
You need an external recorder tethered to the camera while recording to get true 4.2.2 recording into that recorder.

They can upconvert your footage to HD. Just tell them the same format and frame rate and you’ll be good to go. There’s a company in California that does this, not sure who, but google it.

Wow, sounds like you’ve already got it figured out.
First, 4:2:2 works well for keying.
I have a sony EX-1. I love it. I am able to match it up with my 5D and 7D DSLR’s. Philip was a bit biased, it is great for run and gun. You can buy a shoulder mount support, there are many. I use a tripod or monopod if I’m moving a lot. (tripod with one leg out works great). You can also buy a SxS adaptor sold by Hoodman that will take SD cards, which allow you to use SD in the EX-1. I still would suggest having one 32 Gig SxS sony card. Even though they are expensive, they are like a rock.
If I were to buy a camera now, it would be the Panasonic AF-100. I wouldn’t waste money on a DOF adaptor for any camera. This does it all and gives you the DSLR look with film camera technology. A great camera. I’m not worried about matching up cameras. Once you get used to your cameras, you can get used to setting them up properly. This takes spending time testing your cameras before shooting. Takes inexpensive media cards.
Canon has their version of the AF100 coming out next year. Price range will probably be around $16,000 and it shoots in 4:2:2.
EX-1 & AF 100 will shoot 4:2:2 with external recorder.

CS5 and now 5.5 will save you encoding time. The workflow is much smoother than earlier versions. You can just go from your timeline into Encore without encoding. Encoding happens within Encore.
I’m in education, so I know how it is to scream and kick for a budget. I got tired of waiting, so I started writing grants. There is a lot of grant money out there just waiting for you. You just have to take the time to go get it. Of course after I stopped teaching the TV class and went into a computer course, the new person got a big budget with all new equipment, new iMac’s, etc. Of course, she was much prettier than me.

I always shoot in HD and then downconvert. Your final output will still look better in detail than if you started in SD.
I have multiple deliver. I can deliver the HD in Vimeo for a download, SD on DVD, HD on BluRay. It always gives you options. If you only shoot in SD, then you can’t go up.

I think the 60D is a great first camera for a student. I would also buy her a $100 Zoom recorder & a $100 LED light from lcd4video.com. Of course she also will need a tripod.

I mix a sony ex-1 with a 5D & 7D. I usually start with the 3 color corrector tool in final cut. Start with the white eyedropper and adjust, then mid, then crush, – 4 to -10 on average on the blacks.
Usually the blacks on the 5D and other colors are more detailed. It’s hard to say exactly since your settings will vary. Next time, use a warming card to help match your JVC.

I would suggest going to a Tricaster System by Newtek. It will capture, title, switch, & stream all in one small box. We produce a live TV show streamed throughout a network in all the classrooms.
They have an educational pricing for around $5,000. Worth the money if you can get them to pony up the cash.

I also work in a school, so I understand tight budgets. I can give you a bunch of choices, but I need to know exactly how much they are giving you.
Here’s a canon for under $2,000

DSLR is out of the question. You can’t film live performances and keep the focus with all the live action with a DSLR.
