thanks! not the answer I wanted but its what i thought….

i will have a look at instant HD.

it seems criminal to crop the 16:9 clips to 4:3 and I really don’t like the idea of mixing 16:9 and padded 4:3 clips in the same sequence so it seems the only option I have to up-scale the 4:3 to 16:9….

re-frame is fine – i didnt film the footage and its pretty chaotic anyway!

how drastic is a 138% up-scale on SD DV footage?

I take the best way to do this is on the fcp timeline? – then i can re-frame the footage…

I think I was looking for more (quality) than was there. Sometimes you get really engrossed in something and just want it to be perfect!

I feel confident that I am doing the right thing now.

Checked the render settings and it was ticked but I unticked it and it didn’t need rendering.

In the sequence settings what should Field Dominance be set to?

“Have you rendered the HD footage? HD in an SD timeline looks awful unless it has been fully rendered.” – Yes.
“Also – when you drop the HD footage into your SD timeline FCP automatically adds a “Shift Fields” filter to the HD clip.” – I noticed it has done this – does this effect the picture quality in anyway? I figured I should just leave this alone – thought FCP knows better than I do!

Hi,
I am glad you agree that down sizing the HDV footage to SD is better than up sizing the SD footage to HDV.

However I still cannot find a decent set of settings to down size HDV into SD.

Using the points you mentioned in your earlier post and using info on this page on the ‘bonsai’ method:

I have results that are ok but still the dv footage looks much better than the down sized HDV footage.

I have tried Compressor, including using Frame Controls and whilst this produces nice looking results when viewed in QT when I import the file into FCP DV timeline it is poor.

I have been going round and round in circles with this for a few days now.

Thanks. Maybe these setting helped a little but not perfect.

I am working with HDV and SD footage and it seems I can get better result by up-rezing the SD footage to HDV than down-rezing the HDV to SD! This just doesn’t make sense to me.

The final project is to be a SD DVD and I know the client will not be happy with how the HDV footage looks.

mmm confused.

I just can’t get the 1440×1080 clips out of Compressor using Prores codec to be 16×9!
What ever i set in Geometry seems to have no effect.

From different posts etc I believe I need to run the 1440×1080 clips through compressor.

So I guess my main issue is what should I set my timeline sequence settings to?

In FCP i can see:
Apple ProRes 422 NTSC 48 kHz
but also
DV NTSC 48 Anamorphic
but no Apple ProRes 422 NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic…which what I think I need.

Once I know what sequence settings to use I can then compress the 1440×1080 clips to the same settings..
