    I have confirmed to myself that it is a problem I am having with Compressor. I am sure its something I am doing wrong rather than a bug with compressor but if I take a DV anmorphic clip and run it thru compressor using the same set of settings it looks fine in QT and FCP.

    Here are my Compressor settings:

    Encoder:
    Video:
    Compression type: DVCPRO50 – NTSC
    Motion: 29.97
    Compressor: Best
    Scan Mode: Interlaced
    Aspect Ratio: 16:9

    Frame controls:
    Frame controls: On
    Resize filter: Best
    Output fields: Bottom first
    Deinterlace: Better
    Adaptive details: Unticked
    Rate conversion: Best
    Set duration: So source frames play at 29.97

    Geometry:
    Frame size: 720×480
    Pixel Aspect: NTSC CCIR 601/DV (16:9)

    Please help! this issue is driving me insane….I really want to use Compressor to convert the clips rather than using the FCP timeline!

  • Pretty sure i have got to the root of the problem. Prores uses square pixels so there is no way i can get 720×480 widescreen clips using Prores.
    I am using DVCPRO50 anamorphic now and it seems ok.
    One thing I am not 100% sure on…
    I am converting HDV 60i clips to SD so i need to change the field order..
    I choose Bottom First in encoder tab of Compressor, correct?

  • I bet it is operator error! If only I knew what I was doing wrong.

    I think I read that Prores is square pixels? Which would explain why I can’t get a Prores 7240×480 clip to look 16:9? And why FCP (via Matrox MXO) diplays this clips badly as the display is setup to view widescreen clips..

  • I have found that the clips I am producing from Compressor are not 16×9. When I add them to a SD NTSC anamorphic sequence they are not the correct size (and this backs up what I have found viewing the same clips in QT).

    I don’t understand why as a selected NTSC CCIR/ DV (16:9) for the Pixel Aspect in Geometry in Compressor.

    Problems:
    When played in QT clip looks good (no pixelation) but it is not 16:9
    When imported to FCP the clip appears to have pixelation along hard edges. (the clip is of a boat at sea – the sea appears fine but the edges of the white boat aren’t exactly pixelated but they are not smooth) – this effect is not seen in QT – the edge of the boat is smooth and correct in QT.

    Note – I am using a Matrox MXO connected to a Apple Cinema Display to check the footage. I know i have this setup fine as DV NTSC anamorphic clips play fine in FCP.

    hi,

    The conversion done in FCP looks better than using compressor.

    If i convert using compressor and check the result in QT then it looks good but if I then import this clip into FCP it looks bad.

    I must be doing something wrong / missing something but I have read and read and been round and round in circles and can’t find a solution.

    Thanks for replying.

    I am using a Apple Cinema Display hooked up using a Matrox MXO box. I am don’t have alot of experience (obviously!) but I have tried to create a decent setup.

    I believe my system is setup correctly as DV clips look fine on it. It’s a converted HDV to SD clip that looks bad…

    Thanks for your patience.

    I will stick with Prores and downconvert in FCP timeline.

    ‘You seem to be confused about DV NTSC however.’ Thanks for the clarification I meant SD Prores but expressed it incorrectly.

    I thought FCP was based on Quicktime and that is why i was checking the output from Compressor in quicktime. I have checked my FCP setup and I do appear to be producing a clip from Compressor that looks fine in QT but bad in FCP – even if I let the clip over-ride the sequence settings…

    Well I am not sure! I have most success sending clips to and from Color in Prores I have tended to work in Prores whenever I can.

    I have tried many different codecs / settings in compressor to convert HDV60i to DV NTSC but always the results appears worse that allowing FCP to do the re-scale in the timeline. Everything I have read says that I should be able to get better results in Compressor and indeed I have been able to convert with compressor to DV NTSC (prores codec) and get something that looks excellent in Quicktime but rubbish when imported into FCP (jagged edges on man made objects).

    Thanks. Nothing complicated but the sequence is a mix of HDV and SD clips.

    What codec do you recommend? I thought Prores was a good codec to be working in.
