To upsize SD or not??
Hi,
I am putting together a SD DVD that is made from various different clips – HDV 60i (16:9) and SD (4:3) DV clips mainly. The DVD will be several chapters. For the chapters that mix HDV & SD clips I feel that upsizing the DV clips to 16:9 is good but what about a chapter that is to be made of just SD clips? I can re size them by 138% to make them 16:9 in FCP but they don’t look as good but the dvd will then be all 16:9 and therefore a consistent feel.
I realise this is a judgment call but I am interested to hear from other people about what they think.

I think it’s more of a style decision than a technical one. If you scale your SD footage, you’re cutting off parts of the image. It might look like it wasn’t framed very well if you do that. But then again, it might make a lot of sense depending on the content you have.

re-frame is fine – i didnt film the footage and its pretty chaotic anyway!
how drastic is a 138% up-scale on SD DV footage?
I take the best way to do this is on the fcp timeline? – then i can re-frame the footage…

That much scaling would suck. Much better off using the advanced format conversions in Compressor or Instant HD, or using a Kona 3.

thanks! not the answer I wanted but its what i thought….
i will have a look at instant HD.
it seems criminal to crop the 16:9 clips to 4:3 and I really don’t like the idea of mixing 16:9 and padded 4:3 clips in the same sequence so it seems the only option I have to up-scale the 4:3 to 16:9….
