Here’s a very rough effect preset that I think does roughly what you might be after.
FCP X Effect: BG Flicker not Flickr
Quick cut effect, whereby you apply this effect to the top of your two layers stacked up ontop of each other.
Speed control to adjust flicker / strobe rate.
Be gentle with eyes please 😉
Install Location:
Drop the folder inside this zip into the following directory:
Movies / Motion Templates / Effects / BG Effects /

Hi,
You don’t need Motion 5 installed to use custom presets that people have built, BUT you do need to a specific folder structure for it to work.
I’ve uploaded a pdf outlining the procedure.

I started out on ace as well, just as it was disappearing. You really could bash the keys on that and fly along.

Yes, drop shadow is an obvious missing function from the inspector.
A few people here have got around that by publishing parameters from motion and creating useful presets for FCP X.
Simon Ubsdell has created many great presets which incorporate borders, boxes and shadows etc.

Remember if you want to tweak it in any way just keeping adding filters inside fcp.
And if you want to tweak it inside of motion, make it better and upload it again 🙂

Good idea this. Especially if people go on to sell presets, it would be a good practise to include creator and version details in some sort of readme file in the download.
Version details and any fixes could be outlined, and also installation details of the effect included.
A sample useage of the preset could be outlined as well.
With so many good presets already out there in only one month it is already getting hard to keep a track of them all…tough problem to have I know 😉
I’ve been guilty myself of putting presets out there without much info, but I am looking into tidying it up a bit and including more information.

Thanks for the heads up regarding template folder structure. I will get it sorted with future releases.
I believe that with the release of Motion 5, it sure is a game changer as far as the content / preset effect creation is concerned. They could have made the whole process a closed shop, but now it’s open to anyone who wants to jump in and create.
Way too much fun to be had!

Do you have motion installed to open the effect up and inspect it?
Sounds like one of the layers in motion has possibly been trimmed a few frames short of the total duration.
There are a couple of 8 point masks floating about:

As complex as this one looks, it is essentially quite simple.
A replicator added to the effect source and arranged in a line. A very long line mind you.
A replicator added to a black square and added to the above so it gets replicated the same, giving us the black film strip.
A replicator added to a white square and arranged in a long line.
This white square replicator is then added to the black as an image mask to give us the cutout sprocket holes.
OK now its sounding more difficult that it really was… Honest

You need to place the clip you apply the effect to over another clip or coloured background. Otherwise it defaults to black as the background and it will not look very special at all 😉
