Would this be possible as effect.
Posted by Frank Doorhof on July 22, 2011 at 6:44 pmI’m more and more also diving into motion and some people asked me if it was possible to make two clips “flicker” which each other. Sounds funny so let me explain.
In some/most video clips you see this effect were two clips are interchanged very quickly. I could do it with multicam and just hit the two numbers but I wonder with all the filters and enhancements flying around if it would be possible to do the effect automated as effect, maybe even dial in the frames in which it alternates ?
Or is it just waiting for the multicam update ?
Greetings frank.

July 22, 2011 at 8:04 pmOne way to do it would be to turn the transparency of the first clip on/off rapidly and putting the second clip under the first.

July 22, 2011 at 8:15 pmcan that be done easily within FCPx ?
I already thought about using markers but that’s an incredible amount of work 🙂http://www.frankdoorhof.com

July 22, 2011 at 8:20 pmCan you explain a bit more what controls you would like for this?

July 22, 2011 at 8:49 pmHere’s a very rough effect preset that I think does roughly what you might be after.
FCP X Effect: BG Flicker not Flickr
Quick cut effect, whereby you apply this effect to the top of your two layers stacked up ontop of each other.
Speed control to adjust flicker / strobe rate.
Be gentle with eyes please 😉
Install Location:
Drop the folder inside this zip into the following directory:
Movies / Motion Templates / Effects / BG Effects /

Does this work for you?
If I were developing it further I would look into maybe having a control that could also flicker the brightness of either one or both images, and so on.
Note that because this is a time-based effect, the speed slider will change its value depending on how long you have made the transition – for shorter transition durations you need a slower flicker speed. It is based on a 300 frame template (@ 29.97fps) where 100% on the slider alternates every frame, and 50% holds each imaga for two frames, and so on.

July 22, 2011 at 8:59 pmWow you rock.
Will test this tomorrow.
In fact when you can set the speed it’s 100% what I think I need, so happy with this 😉Thanks to fora like this the learning process is highly accelerated, I feel like a total beginner like the first time I opened up photoshop 😉 but I’m getting there, moving into motion is an adventure from stills but so far I like what we can do and again with help from you guys it’s great.

July 22, 2011 at 9:01 pmInteresting – you made yours an effect, where I imagined he wanted a transition.

July 22, 2011 at 9:03 pmThe difference being, my attempt is probably a little bit rough around the edges…. just throwing the idea out there and hopefully it will be taken, tweaked….and made 100x beter than the original.
Cheers,
Brendan
