Additional things that I’m noticing. I’ve got this sequence set us at Sony XDCAM 1080p 29.97, once premiere messes up, it changes this sequence to AJA JD 1920x1080i Don’t know if that has anything to do with it, but just noticed it.

When I downconvert and output through the Decklink card the video comes out very jittery and blocky looking. If it could be user error, I wish someone could point out some settings to check. Compressor is converting much better, but its very soft and not so sharp. I’m looking for the ABSOLUTE best quality here.

I have a blackmagic card and while it downconverts quickly, the quality is TERRIBLE. I’m wishing I would have opted for the Kona card now.

OK, I tried what you suggested and it worked. Except for one problem. I kept getting a drop frame error in this one particular spot. On the last pass I was able to get beyond that drop frame error spot and get the whole file burned. The only problem is that right at that drop frame area, my video now goes to black. I still have audio but no video. My line is fully rendered (all items checked under the render all button) I have done the audio mix down. Any suggestions on this?

I’m going to do what you said and I pray it works (because I’m late with this project). Through all of this mess, I did get the print to video to work. I watched the tape and had two issues 1) my audio was overmodulating bad. However, my audio is not peaking in my sequence 2) I had green/gray screen “blips” during the playback. Do you think edit to tape will correct these items?

Still have the same problem. The above solution worked on a small test. So I got ready print the rest of the footage and I have the same error again! I want to pull my hair out. So again, I appreciate any suggestions on solutions.

Well, I changed my print to video A/V setting to 1080i 10 bit (it was on 8 bit) and it worked. So I guess strike the above issue.

I appreciate the help, but I’m trying to use a black and white video to transition with not a still image.

However, I did finally get it to work after doing some googling. If anyone wants the solution that worked for me here it is:
I put the starting video on V3, put my ink bleed video on V2, and my logo on V1. Click on the video then go to Modify -> Composite -> Travel Matte – Alpha. I then keyed the white (center area) of my ink bleed out and it worked. My video is now playing on the black area of the ink bleed and my white area is keyed out to reveal the logo underneath. To add the orange/red burn to the effect, I took the same ink bleed and placed it on V4 exactly on top of the other ink bleed. I then keyed out the black with a 32 level tolerance, color corrected the white to appear orange and then keyed out the white with a 43 tolerance. It ends up showing the edges of the bleed as an orange red color and the outer black area and inner white area are transparent.

  • I mistakenly wrote component…you are correct, its composite video and RCA’s for the audio. There is no S-video input on the card, so I should use a S-video to BNC adapter in place of the composite to BNC? Is the S-video a higher quality connection?

Also, I have my monitor hooked up via SDI. The only time I can review the footage is when the BMD comand window is open. I cant view if as I’m working in FCP. Is there a way around? You guys have been a savior in upgrading our system!!

  • No SDI on the VTR. All I have is Firewire and componant. IF I capture via firewire then that is just bypassing the card and defeats my purpose. I think my audio problem is that I need componant to XLR cable’s. Hook up the two componant outs in my vtr and run them to the xlr input of the card. However the Blackmajic tech has me running through another cable.
