OK…We have found a PVM 14M4U with SDI component card, a PVM 14L5 and a PVM 20M4U, both with no SDI card. All three are within our price range. Any recommendations about which to get? I’m leaning toward the 14M4U b/c of the SDI but I know people have already recommended the 14L5 previously. Thanks in advance for the help.

Update: We have purchased the Blackmagic Decklink Extreme PCI card with Breakout cables and have purchased the Sony UVW 1800. Thanks to everyone who contributed to help us make the decisions. The last item that we want to purchase is a broadcast quality monitor. I KNOW that we need one. So hopefully, this is the last question…what monitor do you recommend? Are there any certain connections/other features that we need to look for? We are looking to spend under $1000 and would like to get the most bang for our buck. We have no problem buying secondhand. Finally, we made the decision not to do HD at this time (due to us being self financed and our channel not being HD anytime soon) so we do not need a monitor for HD.

Ok now I am confused….I just talked with a tech from one of the well known companies we order much of our equipment from. He recommended simply using a Blackmagic intensity pro card. Anything more he said would be wasted money. Is this going to do what I need?

Also I just bought a UVW 1800! So I’ll need to connect it and also a monitor.

This has turned into about 1000 more questions than I anticipated, but i appreciate all the help.

Ok so would this card be what I need?

Blackmagic Design Decklink SP – Uncompressed 10-bit Analog Video Capture PCI Card with SDI Output for Apple Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro with Real-Time Effects Support – NTSC/PAL – Mac/Win

    Or

Blackmagic Design Decklink Extreme – Uncompressed 10-bit Component and SD-SDI Video Capture PCI Card with Analog Monitoring for Apple Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro with Real-Time Effects Support – NTSC/PAL – Mac/Win

Also, it appears that they come with a series of cables. Is this all the cables I will need to hook everything up?

    Again, really appreciate everyone’s help!

Ok… I’m pretty well convinced to go ahead and purchase the UVW-1800 and do all conversions myself. Now…I’ve heard about the Kona cards and also the black magic. What are the pros/cons of each? What type of wire connections do I also need to purchase? Finally, we have not been using a broadcast monitor. This will connect through the card as well? I hate to sound so ignorant, but what is the monitors purpose? Adjusting colors? I think we have done well with our production so far, especially considering our limited knowledge. At this point we are simply trying to make it to the next level. Thanks for all the wonderful information! BTW, I am using a MAC PRO.

Wow…Lots of GREAT info you guys are offering in this thread. I’m afraid that we have focused on other issues to try and maintain high quality in the production process. However we have fallen short on this end. Its not that my broadcast is all that bad….its just that I know it can be better.

Now, the question that no one has answered yet…what exactly does the capture card do, whether we are talking a Kona or Black Magic etc… On the capturing side I mean…I know the purpose for the card in regards to using the Beta Recorder, but what does it do for the capture end of the process?

Again, thanks for all the wonderful info you guys are offering….this has been very enlightening!

OK…thanks for all the info. I am fairly new to all this but trying to learn as much as I can to make my show better. (my wife is the real editor) Now…why do I need a capture card if my firewire connection is already capturing at 100%? Thanks for everyone’s patience as I expand my knowledge! One more thing…am I going to see a noticeable difference in my quality?

Ok…so how should I have FCP setup for ProRes 422? What settings need to be adjusted? I am stuck with the footage I already have and HD cam is not in the immediate future, so I need to maximize what I have.

OK…Forgive me as I am new to editing….my wife is the editor. I went into sequence-settings and then changed quick time compression to ProRes 422 from DV/DVCPRO-NTSC. Now under audio/video settings, should I change capture preset to HDV-Apple ProRes 422? What else should I change?
