We often have many apps running while editing in FCP. Other than DVD Studio Pro the only trouble I ran into was a super slow down when AE was running. Finally found that disabling Video Output frames in FCP made the difference. Must be a Kona 2 issue. I now have frames off hot-keyed to CMD+OPT+F12 since frames output was already CMD+F12.
For Output to Tape (ETT) we try to kill most stuff, but I tend to still do a few small things like, reading the Cow, which I am doing right now, as I lay off. If frames get drops it will stop. However, we just put our XServe RAIDs together into a SAN (FiberJet) and it is more finicky and drops frames occasionally. I don’t think it has anything to do with using the workstation as it does it sometimes with nothing else running. Anybody have experience with FiberJet. We are demo’ing it and will also demo MetaSan soon. I would like to get Apple XSan but not getting anyone to agree with me ($$$).

Same problem here. There is no Preview checkbox. You can see the audio meters moving, but you hear nada. You can turn up the little Z1 speaker but it is horrible and as mentioned several seconds out of sync. I guess for HDV it’s not “Log and Capture”, but just “Capture”.

The workflow issue is with the ETT window. Manually setup then perform one edit at a time. No list, no saving, strictly manual heavy mouse input.
Traffic has no hooks into the Edit To Tape functionality.
I bet it would be too hard to figure out how to save your edits in Final Cut if you were a programmers. Is there and SDK and can someone write ‘new’ modules for FCP?

VTR Exchange is only one file at a time with no saving of edits.
Traffic creates XML, i.e. does not have machine control, so you are back to FCP ETT function which is one at a time manually entered with no saving.
Just to make sure I am clear on what we need:
We have programs built in FCP. When they re-run in our schedule, we have to re-tap them and duplicate or uplink them. We have to change slate, spots in the beginning, middle and end then do that again several similar tapes, then do a new set of tapes several times, etc. We could ingest the whole thing, change things and layoff again, but that is 2 hours per tape just in ingest/output. We have a dozen or so each week. Ideally, if FCP could save your edits from ETT, you could pop in the next tape and recall them. EDL support is what I am asking for in ETT basically. Or maybe highlight multiple non-contiguous selections on a Timeline and ETT that.
The Cutter app I mentioned has the right idea but Tape to Tape only, no handling of file playback. Would be so much nicer if FCP could do it because we already have the Timelines with all the in and out times ready to go. Like a Ferrari without an engine…

Follow Up:
Herb, I tried to manually make the multiclips but gave up. Two of the cameras on my current event were shooting a shot, say 10 seconds, repositioning and shooting again (don’t worry I will strangle them next time I see them). With the stop start of these angles along with the some starting and stopping of the longer pieces creating usable chuncks with out leaving gaps was near impossible. I was cutting the thing up into hundreds of pieces and having to try to keep up with the numbers which became a blur in the Bin. I would need a spreadsheet to keep up with it all.
My solution was really quite simple. I needed to down convert to SD anyway, so I created a multiclip of all the clips from the same camera, then did a line cut to each successive shot. Actually I had it shuttling forward and everytime I saw black clicked the next clip. I did that for each camera. I set each Timeline to start at the first clip’s TC. Now overnight I did a compressor downconvert of the four timelines and then made a multiclip of them now with only 4 angles!!! Then it worked like a charm. Cludgie workaround but didn’t take long (except for the renders which I need anyway).

Dan the key you asked about is the Option key on Mac keyboard, in Windows world, the same as ALT. You can render with Command R or Option R (selection or all) and check off to what level you want things rendered in the Sequence Render menu drop down.

Thank you Herb for your detailed response. We originally attempted this approach as eluded to in my first post, but it just seemed off as you end up with so many Multiclip segments. I’m sure I will have no problem forging ahead with your advise, but it seems a tiny bit of code could allow all clips in a multiclip from the same camera with the same Angle in the log to be represented as one angle in the viewer. Maybe in Vs. 6 🙂
Just to be clear about your method, you manually arrange your clips and decide what makes each multiclip or you use ‘Multiclip Sequence’ to do it dealing with the overlap settings and such.

You can’t capture HDV downconverted to ‘make new clips’ without problems. You have to capture at HDV. The downconvert on my system if you have machine control on, stops and does the endless cueing at each break, but if you set machine control to none, it keeps going and you get one clip and wrong timecode.
In HDV with machine control on (HDV Firewire control) and you hit Capture Now, you get the new clips and the right TC. but now we have to ‘convert’ everything at some point to SD…
Man, did they release this stuff a bit of a rush or what?

No. It has never looked good so I don’t hardly ever use it. Never thought that YUV vs. RGB might have some effect. Would be nice touch if they improved it next time… along with a boat load of other stuff!
