But shouldn’t the footage be 1280×720 to begin with? I’m worried that it was somehow shot in a 4:3 ratio? If I drop it into compressor and change the aspect, won’t that distort or at least “uprez” it and therefore degrade the quality? fcp seems to be telling me that the footage is 960×720, is it possible that a setting is wrong or that I did something on the camera accidentally? Thanks for the info!

  • Hm, well i captured the audio via the beachtek adapter, would that change it to 48? Rendering does nothing to help. I converted the footage to apple pro res in compressor, but now that I look at the browser I see it says 44.1 under audio rate. How do I change this? Thanks so much for weighing in!

that I don’t know but I know that FCP 7 is the only one that (easily) lets you combine formats in the same timeline. Have you checked out dvxuser.com? They have a pretty good knowledge base and forums as well. Lots of posts about people trying to mix footage. Good luck.

You have to use compressor and convert it to codec: Apple Pro Res, High Quality, for Progressive Footage.
Not sure if FCP 4.5 will work with this though. That’s how I do it in FCP 7 and it’s perfect.
    Good Luck.

September 6, 2009 at 7:17 pm in reply to: Footage off Canon 5D Mark II not smooth

    Hi All,
I have a similar question abotu working with the 5D Mark II footage. We shot some clips with the Beachtek device which allows you to put xlr mics directly into the camera thus recording sound to the card. I had a boom in one channel and a lav in the other. As we were shooting, I was checking the clips in FCp to make sure the lav was good and I could hear the difference between them markedly.

So now I have converted all my h.264 .mov’s from the camera into Apple’s Pro Res 42w2 codec as instructed but the audio is now linked and the 2 audio tracks are identical. This may be more of a compressor question (I don’t know that much about compressor) but can anyone help me figure out why the audio should have become locked like this? I have to get this project finished up, any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Hey,

Did you ever figure this out, I am having the same problem. I shot footage at 720p/60 and it will only import to FCP as having a vid rate of 23.98. When I change what you did in the sequence settings it seems to correct it, but when I go back to look at the settings again, it seems to have gone back to 23.976. Can you shed any further light on this?

    Thanks!

  • I hope you guys can help, I’m having the opposite problem and it’s killing me at the moment…
    What I’m dealing with:
G5 Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC w 4.5 GB Ram
    FCP 5.1.4
HVX-200 Footage shot at 720p/60, dumped from p2 cards onto hard drive. Footage is sound and has been checked.

So I have spent ALL DAY trying to resolve this, I have spoken to Panasonic and Apple and I need help.
(Note that I have ordered my FCP 7 upgrade but of course I have to upgrade my tower to even run it, so as this is a power pc, upgrading to help me out of this particular jam isn’t an option due to time.)

SO here’s the problem; I always shoot in 720p/24p and have never messed with my FCP settings before. On top of that, my camera was being used by a friend so I had to use a rental HVX, I reset it to default, made sure the “Shutter” button was set to “OFF” and shot all day in 720p/60. I did this because it was all handheld and I didn’t want the 24p strobing issues. So I copied all the files from the cards onto my hard drive and returned the rental camera.

When I opened FCP 5.1.4 to edit, I opened the P2 viewer window, chose the clips I wanted to import and clicked “Add to Queue.” and FCP did the rest, I never changed anything. Once I started watching the clips however, both in the FCP P2 viewer, and in the Viewer/Timeline, I noticed the footage is all jittery and strobey… as if it were in 24p. Low and behold the “Vid Rate” column in the browser said “23.98” on all the clips, but I verified in Panasonic’s P2 Management software that they are all in fact 59.94. So I called Apple FCP support and they said “FCP 5 may not be powerful enough to capture 720p/60 so it just brought it in at 23.98 because it was easier. I would download transcoding software to convert the .mxf files to something FCP can use.” Im not very good at FCP at all so already I’m lost. Isn’t this the most basic of default settings? Shouldn’t I be able to edit this stuff without bringing in additional software?

So I tried making duplicates of the clips in Panasonic’s P2 Content Management Software and those files import as separate sound and video files and FCP shows a warning that “These files are not optimized to work with FCP and you may want to convert them elsewhere before using them.” Like I said, I am only the most basic FCP editor, though I know the problem is in the bringing in of the clips, not in a timeline setting or anything. Can anyone PLEASE help me? Much thanks in advance.
