  • MacBookPro dropping frames in FCP (DVCPRO-HD 720p60)????

    Hey there,

Just started a new project, shot on P2 cards. Everything is loaded and ready to go. I’m cutting on a new 2.4GHZ MBPro with 4GB of ram. When cutting I only have FCP open. The only monitor I’m using is the laptop, no additional monitor. Also, my internal drive spins at 7200.

The issue I’m having is that the footage seems to be playing down incorrectly. As if it’s dropping frames or playing back at 18-20FPS. Initially I thought it was the FW800 drive, so I attached a G-Raid esata system. No difference. The CPU isn’t even being fully used. When I watch the clips in QT, no issues at all. Looks beautiful and smooth.

Does anyone know if this is something I can fix? Or is this a limitation to working on the laptop? Sound plays back no problem. Also, all my project media and project are on the G-Raid sata drive.

    Thanks in advance,

    Will

No. This should work perfect. You could cut DVCPRo HD back on g4 powerbooks.

Do you get a dropped frames warning?

Does your timeline match your footage in terms of frame size/frame rate?

Thanks for the reply. I’m using FCP 6.0.3. When I started organizing the footage into sequences, FCP seems to know the what the footage is and asks you if you’d like it to match the sequence settings to the footage. I said “yes”. No need to render. Gray bars all around.

When I open the footage in QT, it tells me it’s 23.987. My sequence setting are at 23.987 as well. It’s weird, I just can’t figure it out. The motion is fluid and beautiful in QT but when I play it down in FCP it stutters.

Also, I’m using FCP as my main window for viewing. I do not have any monitors attached. Just my esata card, and the G-Raid. Is it possible that the VIEWER and CANVAS can’t play back the resized (41%) footage at the proper frame rate?

    Thanks again,

    Will

[Will Whalien] “The issue I’m having is that the footage seems to be playing down incorrectly. As if it’s dropping frames or playing back at 18-20FPS.”

You will see this exact symptom if you have the wrong Easy Setup selected (for example, the footage is 1080i and your Easy Setup is 720p)….are you sure of the format of the footage?

This happened to me the other day…. my shooter was supposed to shoot 720p but shot 1080i instead.

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for the help. Not really sure what happened. But it’s fixed. After reading your suggestions, I went back to my sequence settings and rnoticed the frame rate in the QUICKTIME VIDEO SETTINGS, in the advanced menu, was set to 23.976, not 23.98. Once I changed it to 23.98, the playback was fine. The odd thing is that I don’t this was the issue. The reason, when I go back to the advanced settings in the QT VIDEO SETTINGS menu, the frame rate goes back to 23.976, not 23.98.

Not sure what the heck happened, but it’s fixed. Any clues as to what happened?

    Thanks again,

    Ed

Your subject says 720p60. Is it 60 or 24p?

    Hey,

Did you ever figure this out, I am having the same problem. I shot footage at 720p/60 and it will only import to FCP as having a vid rate of 23.98. When I change what you did in the sequence settings it seems to correct it, but when I go back to look at the settings again, it seems to have gone back to 23.976. Can you shed any further light on this?

    Thanks!
