  • Footage off Canon 5D Mark II not smooth

Posted by Paul Ravillino on July 14, 2009 at 6:01 pm

    Hello,

I recently shot some video at full HD with the Canon 5D Mark II. The files are .mov, and they play back very choppy in FCP. I opened one file in Quicktime, and exported it again using the Sorenson 3 compressor, which made the video look smoother, but not smooth enough to show a client.

I’m doing this on a macbook with an intel processor. I’ve upgraded my RAM to 2GB.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks

    Paul

Try transcoding the 5D’s H.264 file to either ProRes or DVCProHD.

Transcoding to ProRes worked. Thanks a million.

Why does it need to be converted if it’s a .mov to begin with?

.Mov is a CONTAINER, not a CODEC. H.264 is a playback and delivery codec only, not an editable one. This is stuff you really need to know if you intend to use this camera professionally. You need to know what .movs are and what codecs are and all that technical stuff, if you intend to edit with this format.

The individual frames are quite large. I would guess that the drive on your laptop is struggling to keep up with the playback. Faster external drives might help the playback issues.

    Hi All,
I have a similar question abotu working with the 5D Mark II footage. We shot some clips with the Beachtek device which allows you to put xlr mics directly into the camera thus recording sound to the card. I had a boom in one channel and a lav in the other. As we were shooting, I was checking the clips in FCp to make sure the lav was good and I could hear the difference between them markedly.

So now I have converted all my h.264 .mov’s from the camera into Apple’s Pro Res 42w2 codec as instructed but the audio is now linked and the 2 audio tracks are identical. This may be more of a compressor question (I don’t know that much about compressor) but can anyone help me figure out why the audio should have become locked like this? I have to get this project finished up, any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.
