The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

Is the “record button” flipped to “lock-out” on the TAPE?

No other way except to rip the DVD files, or capture the DVD from a player as an analog source.
Better by far would be to recreate your project using a new hard drive.
If you “can’t”, your’re going to have to live with the DVD source.

Locate a service shop that knows what WET-CLEANING video heads means.
If they are just very “dirty” a wet-cleaning will take care of the problem.

You’ll have to explain what “broadcasting” sounds like.

You should not attempt a serious edit by only looking at the computer monitor for judging quality.
FCP is designed as an editing SYSTEM to be operated with an external video monitor connected
(through a camcorder is just fine) DURING the edit process.
The external video monitor would have shown you that many video “freeze frames” will wiggle, dance, jitter, flicker, etc.This Still-frame “flicker” is absolutely normal and is due to the fact that video “frames” are actually made up of TWO “fields”.
If there is a lot of ACTION (or motion) in the frame you chose to “freeze”, the 2 fields will appear slightly different from one another and will jump back-and-forth between themselves, over and over during the “freeze”.To solve the problem, just add the “Flicker Filter” or, better still, the “De-Interlace Filter” to the freeze(s).

Flicker FilterAgain, if you watch the external monitor, you will see the flicker go away after a filter is applied.

I always monitor my audio on external “VU meters”.
The “Peak-reading meters” in FCP (and virtually ALL NLE’s) are not good at telling you how “loud” (meaning AVERAGE level) your audio actually is.
Peak meters just reveal “instantaneous” peaks in the track… that, in many cases, your ears would effectively “ignore.”Peak readers ARE good (essential?) for making sure you don’t exceed the very exacting (and unforgiving) top clip level in digital audio… that’s why FCP (and many other digital audio devices) uses them.
But the Peak meters can make you THINK your track is much “louder” than it actually is when LISTENED to (or when viewed on VU meters).
If you have a Beta Deck (say a UVW-1800) in your suite, you can send the audio from FCP to IT and watch the audio levels on the decks VU meters when editing.
Adjust your audio tracks to read “normally” on the VU meters and then set the TONE LEVEL.
(Yes, you can adjust the TONE to match the edited tracks.)
Then you can make sure the dubs you send will have audio that is more “standard” in level.
