    Greetings,

I have a problem perhaps someone using Panasonic equipment can help me solve. Here’s my system config: Mac G5 running FCP4.5 to an AJA Io via Firewire. Connected to the Io, I have a Panasonic AJ D455 (YPbPr in and out), plus a Sony PVW 2800 (s-video in and out). I’m controlling the two decks with RS422 through a 9 pin switch. All is well until I attempt to “edit to tape” from FCP. The Panasonic deck pre-rolls, but at the “in” point, the deck will not go into record. FCP ‘thinks’ it’s editing and will continue to layoff the source material and keep the deck rolling through the end of the sequence. I’ve tried a few things to solve this, but nothing’s worked. A friend at AJA thought it might be a polling issue between FCP and this deck. He sent me a software plugin, but it hasn’t helped. Does anyone have this deck in their system? There are so many little menu variables in the D455 I’d like to know how it should be configured. . .

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • First thing I though of:

Is the “record button” flipped to “lock-out” on the TAPE?

My Panasonic AJ-HD1200A deck has a REC Inhibit switch on the front of which will stop any attempt to Edit to Tape. Does your deck have something similar either as a hard switch or a menu option?

I have an AJ-D450, and although it is of no help to you, the plug-in aja sent me fixed the issue you are having. I could not even capture prior to that, so I never made it to the edit to tape stage before installing the plug.
I always got an error message of some sort, “like tape is unthreaded”, or “problem with tape”, or some such
I’m running an AJA card though, not an IO

    Hi Walter,

Thanks for the relpy. The AJ D455 doesn’t have this switch on the front panel, nor in the menus that I can see. I am able to ‘print to tape’ from FCP with my configuration and it works fine. . just can’t ‘edit to tape’?? I wonder if it’s a FCP issue? For background: I had been using firewire between my G5 and the Pani deck and was able to use the ‘edit to tape’ mode with no problem. Had a firewire switch between the Pani deck and the AJA Io (which brought in the Beta deck). I wouldn’t recomend using a firewire switch. It caused numerous problems with FCP preferences and routinely crashed the system. That’s why I re-configured my system to run everything through the AJA Io.

    Thanks Jim,

My work around for the time being is to ‘print to tape’from FCP. The AJ D455 is accepting this com mode from FCP. I appreciate your post. . .

    Hey Matte,

Thanks for the post. Yeah, I thought of that, too! I wish it was that easy. I’m working around the problem by using the ‘print to tape’ mode out of FCP. It seems to be working for the time being.

    Thanks again,

    Paul

Are you attempting to do an Insert Edit? My 1200A cannot perform an Insert edit so that command would not work if I was doing an Insert. Assemble Edit works all the time, but not Insert.

    Walter,

I haven’t tried insert editing. I have a tech guy from Panasonic working on a solution. I’ll post any help he can give me.

    Thanks,

    Paul

    Hi Jim,
I’m having the same problem you were having with that Panasonic deck. Do you still have a copy of the patch so that I can use it on my FCP? I’d appreciate it.
    Thanks,
