PBS or a PBS affiliate?
Not too sure PBS (the network) accepts:
A) Commericals
B) Prosumer DV
C) DVD
D) Any “sync audio” recorded on the camera mic. -

I actually got something to download to audition!The “spike” could be a just an odd aberration… they happen.
Was there someone nearby with a CEL PHONE… they can cause all kinds of havoc to a camcorder.
But I don’t HEAR the voice of a child saying ‘help me mummy’.
Hey, you’re OUTSIDE… so in the area there just might have been a child saying ‘help me mummy’.
If you want more input, can you re-post your clip and add about 5-10 more seconds on EACH SIDE of the “problem”.
Its way too hard to evaluate to such a short clip. -
The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

Not true. You can PREVIEW this (looks terrible), but to output you must render.
Thats’s why I gave you the suggestion I did.
Save your time and money and shoot it to tape.

Avoid using the “native” Titler(s) in FCP for just about anything important.
Use “Title Crawl” (its included with FCP) for rolling credits.
For non-rolling titles, use “Title 3D”.

I would really like to participate on your “fun” here, but I can’t get any kind of usable file to download from that hideous monstrosity of a rip-off site that you linked-to.

Roll the tape and shoot each card for 10 sec. (or however long you want them to remain on-screen).
You can put a bunch of them on a music stand and pull one off at a time, or simply place one on the stand, let it sit, remove it , put the next one up, repeat… all while the tape rolls.
Then capture the tape and edit normally. (Any kind of “stills” would need rendering, the rolling tape footage will not,)
You COULD capture into FCP “live” via FW (non-controllable device preset), but if anything went wrong with the capture, all your work would be lost and you’d have to repeat it.
Just use TAPE.

I do this when working (when I’m “just” the editor) with a producer sitting “behind me”.
(S)he can change the decision as much as needed without affecting the solid “base” that’s being “covered” by the cutaways.
It also makes the cutaways easy to see on the timeline, and easy to color-correct separately from the “base” track after-the-fact. -

“You say you “know” it is in stereo in FCP but when asked if you know this by listening, you say you are not an expert and therefore can’t tell.
I don’t see that it was meant as a “dig” to ask if you know the difference between stereo and mono by LISTENING… as I doubt there is anyone reading this who does not know the difference between mono and stereo within 5 seconds of listening with headphones. I assume this is how the “techs” you are sending the tapes to can tell if the tape is mono.
Nobody has asked HOW you are converting/importing the CD to an AIFF file.
Its quite possible that you are not converting to a STEREO AIFF.Regardless, if you are MONITORING audio and video correctly (via an external deck, camcorder or “card”) you would know (via that monitor) if, in fact, the audio was stereo or mono.
And, since you would be dubbing out to tape via the same route that you were monitoring, the tape would have the same audio mode as your timeline edit.So you see, there are lots of questions that must be answered by YOU before any of us (“mugs” or not) can give you and intelligent idea of what may be set wrong.
