  • Storyboard Still Capture into FCP 5

Posted by Jurrinator on August 24, 2006 at 2:50 am

    Hi,

I have a large stack of storyboards on 8.5×11″ paper that I want to edit into FCP. (One board per sheet) Is there an efficient way to simply line up the shots on my DV Camera on a stand and click and capture the picture into FCP?

I don’t want to spend countless hours scanning on a flat bed. I’d like my source pix to already be at the NTSC resolution and not need rendering in the timeline.

Any plug ins or shareware out there that does this? Is there something already in FCP that does this?

    Thanks for your help!

Roll the tape and shoot each card for 10 sec. (or however long you want them to remain on-screen).

You can put a bunch of them on a music stand and pull one off at a time, or simply place one on the stand, let it sit, remove it , put the next one up, repeat… all while the tape rolls.

Then capture the tape and edit normally. (Any kind of “stills” would need rendering, the rolling tape footage will not,)

You COULD capture into FCP “live” via FW (non-controllable device preset), but if anything went wrong with the capture, all your work would be lost and you’d have to repeat it.

    Just use TAPE.

Thanks for the idea of rolling tape, but I understand that FCP 5 can have NTSC stills (like JPEG) and not need to render. I found these articles below about how the animation guys at DreamWorks uses ToonShooter to input their storyboards into the editor. Does something like this exist for the general public and works with FCP 5? Thanks!!

“ToonShooter has a camera precariously mounted a couple of feet above a drawing board. Artists first sketch on paper, and then slide the paper through ToonShooter, where the image is digitized and animated on the fly. From that point, the artists can easily work with those same images on their workstations and quickly integrate those images into existing scenes, saving
many animators many hours of work.”

“ToonShooter allows animators to convert traditional hand-drawn artwork into a digital format that can be easily played back and manipulated during production.”

Not true. You can PREVIEW this (looks terrible), but to output you must render.

Thats’s why I gave you the suggestion I did.

Save your time and money and shoot it to tape.
