You should try playing/capturing the tape in another camcorder or deck.

The tape may have been recorded on a camera with heads that were misaligned with the unit you are now using.

Try dubbing the tape directly to another DV camcorder or deck via FireWire.

Then try capturing the new dub.

Sorry, but THAT’s your problem.

If anyone who regularly posts here was in the room, the situation could likely be sized up and remedied within 30 minutes.

Assuming otherwise properly operating gear,
I’d suspect-

A) mix-to-monitor level problem
B) connection problem (bad or improperly wired cable, wrong impedence, wrong output
C) bad mixer adjustment or mic set-up

Can’t do much else from this end.
But if I was at the site, I’d be glad to help.

If your source tape is DV and your timeline and edit are in DV, then the quality will be the same if you capture via FW,

You could have set a menu item incorrectly on the camcorder.

If there is a choice that says “A/V iLink Out” (or similar) try swtiching it on or off and re-try after each change.

To test if the FW connection is working.

Get a FW cable with the mini 4-cond plug (camcorder plug) on each end, and hook two camcorders together (DV and Digital 8 will be fine.)

When you play one, its output should show up on the other camera via the FW.

There are several 3CCD models.

They are not great in low light, but when you have better lighting or are outdoors, the images rival pro camcorders.
