The zoom works in two ways:
If you have any clip(s) selected (highlighted), then the zoom will go in to a point centered on the selected clip(s).
If you DON’T have any clip selected (highlighted), then the zoom will go in to a point centered on where the cursor is sitting.
So, as long as you do NOT have any clip(s) selected (highlighted, by touching them with the cursor) on the timeline, if you hit the ZOOM key (Apple +) the timeline will expand, centered on the cursor (“playhead”).
If the zoom “jumps” to another area on the timeline, it means that you already had a clip “selected”.
You can “de-select” any selected clip(s) by hitting Shift-Cmd-A (think of it as UN-“select all”).
Its easy to try this out.

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCPro & FCExpress.Download these free Apple Scripts at

October 26, 2005 at 5:32 pm in reply to: SMPTE timecode for broadcast?[Dave Felder] “Can I stripe the tape in advance, putting the timecode onto channel 3, then insert edit the program onto the tape with audio going to channels 1 & 2.”
Yes.
[Dave Felder] “If so, where does the Time code signal come from and how do I get it onto audio track 3?”
Take it out of the “TC out” jack on the back of the BetaCam deck (if it has one) and connect it to the Ch. 3 audio input (you’ll need some audio cable adapters).
Set the level so that it reads very nearly 100% (Zero db). -

October 26, 2005 at 12:40 pm in reply to: -12db reference from FCP and the rest of the broadcast world -20dbNotice how everyone jumped right in to answer this? 🙂
There may be a “standard” somewhere, but its never the same one for everybody.
If you’re talking TONE, its easy to decide where to set it, it doesn’t MOVE.
So if you decide -12 is your reference to “Zero” on a VU meter. Where do you let your audio PEAKS go to?
So if you decide -20 is your reference to “Zero” on a VU meter. Where do you let your audio PEAKS go to?
Digital peak-reading meters are very hard to read as to AVERAGE level.
Analog average-reading VU meters are very hard to read as to PEAK level.I “cheat” by leaving FCP connected to a deck with VU meters on it and read THEM as I edit. They will better show real audio levels by ignoring the instantaneous peaks that the FCP meters register.
Then, I set my FCP tone to the “Zero” point on the VU meters and dub out.
It really doesn’t matter if you use -12, -20, -14, (etc.) in FCP as long as you adhere to that as the “reference” and set your tone to that point.
The operators of the “final” playback can set their gear to YOUR reference so it will match THEIR reference.
Now, I’m sure there are others who can shoot this full of holes… but I’ve had no complaints about my levels from the dozens of places I send my dubs to.

October 26, 2005 at 12:26 pm in reply to: Waiting for timecode[Kevin C.] “So, while I’m shooting, I guess best way to prevent timecode breaks is just to make sure not stop the tape and forward to a point beyond where you last shot, correct?”
No, NOT correct. If you do what you described, it will GUARANTEE a timecode reset.
Here’s the method:
If you choose to stop and playback a section of your recording during the shoot, you can make SURE you don’t let the TC reset buy doing THIS:1. After you playback to the end of your last shot
2. Rewind (“Search” back) just a few seconds
3. Play to the end again but WATCH the TC numbers and SEE where they END.
4. Rewind (“Search” back) just a few seconds AGAIN
5. Play to ALMOST the end of the TC but hit PAUSE (that’s PAUSE, not Stop) anytime before the TC runs out.
6. DO NOT HIT STOP
7. (While the tape is still PAUSED) switch the camcorder from VCR to CAMERA mode.
8. You’re NOW ready to go right on shooting from there with no TC reset.Seems like a lot to remember, but if you DO this, you’ll not have the “Reset TC Blues” during the edit.
And to Shane,
[Shane Ross] “all it does it make the tape more susceptable to dropout, as you are now recording over a used tape.”
Except for the above statement, I agree with all of your post about PRE-BLACKING. No need to do it.
But, I hardly call a single pass and rewind a “used tape”.
Sony and others claim a DV tape is “good” for dozens of re-uses and I’ve never had a failure on any “work-tapes” that I’ve used over and over in the edit bay. Some shooters actually suggest that playing or recording (even fast-forward/rewinding) a tape thru before “actual use” lessens the chances for drop-outs as the heads can “brush away” any loose particles that may be left after manufacture.
I’m not saying I put much stock in this either (no pun inteneded), but it is “one of those things” that gets oft-repeated until it becomes LORE in the biz.
Again, I DO agree that pre-striping a camcorder tape is not much more than a wasted hour of head-wear.

If the song is copyrighted, you can NOT use it for ANY kind of edit without expressed, written permission (usually with a fee involved).
No matter if you make money with it, no matter if its “only on the web” (where every human on the face of the earth with a web connection can access it… I’d call that “public”), no matter if you just “give the DVD away” to clients, no matter if “the guys next door” do it…
It is not legal to edit (“sync”) copyrighted music to any video or film without permission.

Well, technically it is ALWAYS in the VCR mode 😉
Sorry, I just had a brain-freeze.
CAMCORDERS need to be in the VCR mode to FW dub.

The DSR11 needs to have its input set to iLink or DV with the remote control.
