It is the actual “connecting the music WITH the images” that comes into play here (as well as “reproduction copyright”).

We can debate the LOGIC (or lack thereof) of these laws forever… but what really matters is the FACT that they EXIST.

If the images are “too detailed” and cause what I call “buzzing” on a video monitor, I add the “Gaussian Blur” filter to the still image and adjust it to a low (say, between 0.25 to 1.5 percent).

This smoothes the image to a lower “video resolution” that’s more compatible for TV reproduction.

If you adjust the blur very carefully it will make the “buzz” go away without making the image look too “soft”.

More likely its related to the external drive.

With a Powerbook, you should use a FireWire PC Card (PCMCIA) inserted in the computer’s card-slot and connect the camcorder or deck to that card (for capture and monitoring) and connect the External HD to the built-in FW port.

Also, even though many do use external FW drives, they are not officially “sanctioned” to operate with FCP.
Many use the internal drive for media with a Powerbook.

If this is a PLAYBACK issue, it would do you well to MIXDOWN YOUR AUDIO at several points during the edit if you experience dropped frames.

You should “Mixdown” the Audio for playback before you dub out of FCP, or during the edit, if you have audio/video stuttering, drop-outs or freezes.

NOTE: Mixdown has even been demonstrated to help with slipping, skipping problems (or “missing” audio clips) for files being EXPORTED as QT (or similar) files out of FCP.

First, SELECT ALL of your audio tracks (highlight them) on the timeline, then:

Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.

You should see a dialog box telling you its rendering.

It might seem to make little sense that “Mixing down” even simple audio tracks will “fix” complex video “freezes” or random audio dropouts to tape or export, but it CAN.

NOTE: It does not matter of you only have one audio track, if there are random freezes during output, you should try the Mixdown.

NO ONE is “alright” using any “non-cleared” copyrighted music in a professional edit.

“But my client handed me the CD” is not a defense. Not even a little bit.

Mr. Workaround sez:

I keep a small digital kitchen timer ($4-5 at Wal-Mart) next to my keyboard.

If its a longish render, I tap in the time (the timer has “direct entry) and it will beep at me at the end of the time set.

I know the “render thermometer” can be inaccurate, but if you wait a couple of minutes after it starts (again, if this is a long render) you can get a close idea.

I can take the timer with me so I can go grab a coke or make a phone call and be alerted when the render is (approximately) done.

To access Sub-Frame Audio in FCP

Click audio into Viewer, then:

1. Magnify Glass (Zoom) Tool-Click Upscale (Frame shows as Large Grey Area)
2. Arrow Tool-Click on FRAME in question.
3. Option-Click to add key-nodes at sub-frame level (1/100th frame.)
4. Arrow Tool-Click/Drag node levels.

Pick any portable that has a VIDEO INPUT.
The more you pay, the bigger and better the image.
If its not critical (and you don’t mind “small”), you can spend under $100.

If its critical, you may need to spend $500 or more.

IMHO, don’t mess with “wireless”… its a lot of trouble and it simply is not reliable.

You did not say WHAT FORMAT of tape.

Regardless, you must have a deck that accepts EXTERNAL timecode for the tape copy to have the same TC as the original.

You then must switch the deck to EXTERNAL TC for it to know to record it.

If you don’t own a deck with this feature, you may need to take the tape to a production house that DOES.
