Wild guess:
Is your sound BWF?
If so, try saving from QT pro as WAVE.
(This will strip the BWF info that can fool FCP)

Or, switch to NDF BWF import, and RESTART FCP.
Then import the sound again.

First, you make it sound like interlace is a bad thing and should be removed before going to DVD.
This is NOT the case. It should go interlaced to DVD.

Now, Pal DVD is Upper field, so you need to change the field dominance.
You can do so in Compressor.

What i don’t get, on you screenshot, the canvas is set to 100%.
This way, you should see one pixel high differences between the fields.

Your image shows a huge blown up version of that, the image shows bad scaled interlaced footage. But at 100%, there should be no scaling…

How does the footage look in QT player?
(Switch to the properties and set it to display High Quality, or you won’t be able to tell anything.)

If wave contains TC, it’s probably BWF.
Besides Jeffrey’s comment, the TC MUST be stored in a Bext or Mext entry.
(Bext for Wave, Mext for Mpeg1 layer II)

Mp3 is ‘not’ a BWF format.
(That does not mean that someone could have added a Bext or Mext part…)

The common Mp3 style metadata is ‘sound devices’ style.

why FW800 for less than 20 MB / second?
FW400 goes up to 50, giving you 2 streams.

And i highly doubt these disks themselves will outperform 50 MB/sec.

Or am i missing something?

well, Avid can export as OMF NOT self contained.
This means there is no 2 gig limit, unless you have 3 hour takes…

But to add something functional:

If the source aint 24 bit, it is no use to export as 24 bit as you won’t gain anything.
If the source was 16 bit, you save 1/3 on file size.

And indeed, if you did a resoanable offline, 15 seconds is overkill.
2 seconds should be enough. Or, provide a few ambient tracks (room tone, or just ‘silence’ from different locations (birds, cars, whatever is in your show that could be handy.)

For dialogue, 15 seconds is utterly nonsense.

Either way, it’s one of these options, or no delivery at all…

Trouble is, Codecs in FCP can be RGB or 601 / 709.
And, gamma is different from the rest of the world.

In your case, your client is probably right. You delivered levels from RGB 0,0,0 to 255,255,255.
Also, if you’re not on the latest version in Snow Leopard, your gamma is off.

My standard procedure is NOT color bars, but 3 vertical bars, black, mid grey and pure white.

This way the other side can see what i mean with black, gamma and white, and thus compensate.

If they work on Avid, and you did NOT render to DNxHD, they can import with interpret as RGB, and the levels will match. Gamma still needs a manual correction.

Good thing, it’s probably fixable…

Can’t help you here then…

But if the first caption is indeed 00:00:00:00, it is wrong.
CC relies on buffering first, then display.
So the first caption must start later than 00:00:00:00

Perhaps your problem lies there?

(this is WILD guessing!)

Make a copy, remove the first entry from the .SCC (using SimpleText)
see if it works then.

Don’t know if it can hang FCP, but you need to have a zero based file.
(Meaning, in the file the start TC of the (virtual) first caption should be 00:00:00:00, no matter your tape/timeline TC.

Open it with a text editor (don’t save it!, make a copy!).
You can’t read the text, but you can see the TC’s.

If the first caption is not a low number, ask the company for an altered file.
(or, do that anyways 🙂
