Make sure that you have ‘interpret footage’ set to fields, not frames.
If that is set wrong, any scaling will be horrible.

Having said that, AE is notorious for making stuff softer.
From memory, especially if it renders interlaced.
So if you do not do any scaling, you could have everyting frame based (instead of field based).

And there are a lot of other variables that come into play.
Pick a nice test clip and test away. (It took me a couple of days to test before committing myself to a workflow, but i had a large project, year of work to do, so it did pay off…)

December 24, 2010 at 9:26 am in reply to: Audio Relinking in FCP for a RED Feature

FCP keeps track of clip attributes ‘somewhere’ in the project file.
So you need to trash that info. No idea where it is stored though.

It is connected to the file names. So if you rename the files (perhaps just renaming the folder is good enough as well), FCP should show you the corrected files.

Now of course this will probably mess up your sequences, but the clips should relink.

    I don’t get it.
If you are an online shop that works with DPX, how come you don’t know this?

I have a feeling you will encounter a few other things as well.

    But, the math is simple.
file size per frame * fps * 1.2 (little room to spare) per stream you want to play back.
That means for 30 fps 2k about 324 mB (note the capital B) per second.

It is not uncommon NOT to be able to playback in RT, but use them just to conform, while rendering to another codec for preview.

    Hmm.
My bad, i was thinking you wanted to go the other way.
Does not really make a difference, as the same limitations apply.
Although you can reconnect a bit easier using tools from my.
(see my site, look at FCPreconnect and QTchange)

Nevertheless, it’s best you stick to Avid.
There is a full functional 30 day trial.
Now do not think you can LEARN avid in 30 days, it is a hell of a difficult application (although nowadyas my weapon of choice).
Hire an Avid editor, sit next to him and learn.
(or be prepared to do hard time study, it is NOT easy, bur worth learning)

(oh, and yes, Subbits works with older versions of FCP as well…)

    Sacha,
    Didn’t know you’re from Israel.

In that case, Subbits works as a conversion tool, but it does NOT support right to left languages in the text editing field, so that is not your best bet. (unless you are translating to a left to right language of course)

The XML part is easy, export a sequence with just one title as XML, open it in a text editor and study it.
Then you’ll know the unique text strings you need to find / replace.

It’s not that hard, XML is very well human readable.

If it is too hard, i can do the conversion for you (for a small fee), but first toy with it yourself and see where it gets you.

Again, make a sequence with just the subs first, and work on that.

    hth,

Yes, you can export an EDL and re-capture.
You’ll loose any metadata (fx, audio levels, titles etc.)

Moving the media is also possible, but you need to set the Reelname on every clip (can be done in batches though), as Avid does not import Reelname from QT clips (it does take TC nowadays.)
    Another option would be Metacheater.

But i don’t know how much time you have on your hands and how complicated your timeline is, but i would concider Automatic Duck.
If the price is to high, go to a posthouse that has it and let them do it for you. Will save time and headaches.

You can export your work to XML, do a search/replace in a text editor and swap out with params you want.
Quite fast, but do copy out the subs to a fresh sequence first, or your XML will be quite large.

But, IMHO, you’re nuts doing this in FCP.
Using a dedicated subtitle tool you will be way faster.

And i’ve written one, see here:
    https://www.videotoolshed.com/?page=products&pID=12

This thing allows you to import XML, and export again with custom settings. (you need to provide it with a template of how you want the subs to look)
This also gives you the opportunity to switch to another title generator, or render to bitmaps (eg for DVD subpictures), and all sorts of output formats for internet. (note that uploading subs to YouTube is way better than burned in subs, as YouTube will translate it for every user.)

Export to XDcam MXF from Vegas, take that to FCP and import trough the XDcam import app. (free from sony)
Should give you nice quality and a fast workflow. Now if the mixed codecs give you trouble, you can always transcode to one or the other, depending on the amount.
Do not worry about file size differences, XDcam in your situation will be as good as Prores.

December 17, 2010 at 9:06 am in reply to: Avid Media Composer 5 issue with format

    Well, yes, it sucks.
I switched to Avid after Premiere and M100.
It took me a year of cursing (and luckily back than i had a rock solid ADB keyboard that could sustain my beatings) before i took an Avid 101 course.
    That was a life saver.

Forget what you know, start over, learn to work the way Avid wants you to work, or you’ll get frustrated.

Personally, i love Avid for a number of reasons, but there are still a lot of things that are just plain stupid.
Learn to get over it, the benefits outweigh the cons
