Steve,
You are right, your soundguy is wrong.
Probably he thinks about going from 23.976 to 29.97,
or a standards conversion like from 25 to 29.97But in your case, you want a 1:1 frame relation to keep the image as crisp as it can be, so you did the right thing.
(assuming your source was progresssive, or you did a de-interlace.)Now you need to think about the sound. You can pitch shift it so you will have no quality loss, but that might be tricky with music of famous voices.
You can change the speed of the sound while maintaining the pitch, but that is a form of black magic.
(Meaning, it can be done but results are hard to predict. Good thing is your piece is short so you can experiment with different settings.)Bouke

I have made a piece of software that can transcode from Prores straight to DNxHD.
It should be faster than RT, depending on your system.
Currently it only works for Mac, and is intended to work in the field, but there is no reason you could not use it in a studio environment. At this moment i only have a mac version that does NTSC frame rates, but i could make it for Windows as well.
Have a look here:
https://www.videotoolshed.com/product/15/offloader/3And, i could add an option to work with AVCHD clips straight away.
I don’t know how far the shooting is from the studio, but this thing was intended to start rendering during the shoot and the trip home, assuming / hoping that the render is finished when you get back.
Don’t hesitate to contact me to further customize / refine it, it is still work in progress.

Sure it is possible.
Use this:

I don’t get what is happening.
The de-interlace filter in Compressor should give decent results.
The preview in compressor might be horrible, but a renders should do the trick.
Pick a few seconds of testing material and start experimenting.Bouke

eeer, if someone else is going to cut it after you, why not give them the original quality?
If the other side is a pro company, they will know what to do.
Otherwise your question has been answered several times…

1) Stop calling this a ‘problem’. It is NOT a problem, it is the way it is intended to be.
2) Of course it looks fine in the camera. Do you think anyone would buy a camera that has a crappy viewfinder?
3) You can set up VLC to display interlaced material as fields, or de-interlace. Two menu items, one to turn it on/off, the second to choose the method.
A very extreme interlaced sample file is here:
https://www.editb.nl/fielddominancechange/
(Get the .mp4)This is one line black, one line white alternating.
This gives you a 50 Hz flicker if it is played one field after another, as it is on a normal TV.
(50 Hz as the file is 25 fps interlaced)
Toy with it, it shows a bit on how the different de-interlacers work.
Eg throwing away one field results in a pure black or white image, depending what field is trashed. Not suitable for SD de-interlacing, but can be good going from HD to small internet video.4) De-interlacing can be done in a huge amount of ways. FCP export uses QT, if you set de-interlacing there, you don’t get the best.
Compressor or any other encoding app. will give you better results.
Always, First de-interlace, then scale. If you first scale you introduce artefacts that cannot be repaired.
Note, the normal ‘ugly’ display of interlaced material does not contain artefacts, as it is NOT wrong!Bouke

no, it is not a fault, it is called ‘interlacing’.
This is what you have shot, and it is normal behaviour. If you want to output for broadcast / dvd / blueray, it is just fine.
Otherwise, de-interlace when transcoding to your output of choice.Bouke

So why not transcode to 422 and be done with it?
If it is already graded, and the source was 422, for what reason would you need 4444?Bouke

[Michael Gissing] “At no stage has it been made clear what the original frame rate of the film was”
Well, as the OP told in the thread:
(note to you, read thread before making smart remarks)[Heather Mahoney] “The film is an old Russian war film captured at 25fps PAL that originally was designed to be shown at 24fps”
Now i’m signing off, i did my best.
